Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

I did google it. And got plenty of results. Reputations are sometimes undeserved, or at least exaggerated. Particularly concerning longevity and reliability. For example: Old Volvos. "built like a tank, go on forever, won't let you down" etc. etc. I've had two Volvo 940s. Yes, clearly well...

Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

Does a seatpost fail, snap suddenly, or does it warn one first? Mine started to "recline" and then just fell away. I was cycling up a 1 in 4 hill at the time, in the saddle, and as the saddle reclined i just took up the load on my legs, pedalled for a while standing up, and then stopped n...

Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

There are a few rusty bolts on my bikes, so I can see the point of titanium/SS there maybe. But otherwise I can't really see the point of stainless on something like a pedal cycle. I built my current bike up from scratch, so gave the inside of the frame a very thorough treatment with Dinitrol. The b...

Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

The Campagnolo Ti posts pop up on eBay now and again but they do tend to command a price premium. Probably about the same as the JL above, but Campagnolo quality.. Thanks. I would like to avoid anything used. I'd like to know the provenance of anything I'm going to use. Maybe I'm being silly, but i...

Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

I wonder where one could buy a nice two bolt seatpost head to bond into a suitable tube? Do you think you can do better than a manufacturer, and especially to have a guarantee for this? Getting something from a reputable brand gets your bum covered (pun intended) No, I do not necessarily think I ca...

Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

Edit. As an afterthought it occurs to me that if i were looking for a seatpost made with a titanium tube, I would be happy about the material but less happy with it having a welded construction. I'd much sooner have a bonded on alloy clamp with no potentially dodgy weld. That's a good thought. As T...

Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

I have a Chinese one that I think is all Ti. The clamp most certainly is very very tough, so not a cheaply alloy. Bolts were Ti and crap. Thanks, do you have a name for it or a link? Try xacd.com . I have a titanium frame from them, purchased in 2005. Still in good nick. They do titanium seat posts...

Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

I've had a few seatposts fail, ..... Kind of scares me really. My weight, mileage and usage suggests I won't have fails due to fatique or sudden stress. And hopefully buying from a reasonably decent manufacturer will reduce the possibility of manufacturing faults. But out of interest, what material...

Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

Also Brucey, I know you're good at the engineering type stuff. I don't have a lot of seatpost showing, about 120mm, rails to collar. So with some long seatposts I'm nearing the limit due to the bottle cage bolts. But thinking about length: Posts always have a minimum insertion mark, to reduce the p...

Re: Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

Thanks. Moots seem to be difficult to source in the UK. And also very expensive. I'm kind of looking more at USE or Van Nic at the moment.

Or else just a good aluminium, which seems to be Thomson, and replace every so often.

Titanium seatpost that is all titanium

I am finishing last year's bike build. The seatpost was borrowed and needs to go back to its donor (bike). It's a touring bike in Reynolds 853 (at least the seat tube is). 27.2 dia. Looking at how it's set now there is 430mm from the rails to the first bottle carrier bolt. There's about 25mm setback...

Re: Two sets of brakes?

Quite a few of the "Cross top" levers actually interrupt the outer cable, and rely in the return spring in the Brake r in the "Main" Lever. So to do what you suggest might involve finding cross top levers with a return spring (Old School brakes had springs in the brakes, more mo...
