Re: Camping touring vs B&B touring - how much extra weight?

Where I'll be going (Outer Hebrides) doesn't really have such a thing as "camp sites" I don't think. Even if it did I'd be tied to getting to one, which is sort of what I'm trying to avoid. So it would be wild camping. There are some, and good spots for wild camping aren't round every cor...

Scotrail bike carriages

I saw this: https://road.cc/content/news/267921-scotrail-unveils-forthcoming-west-highland-line-carriages-space-20-bikes?fbclid=IwAR1aGGCwbCnpW4I98JmSvXlLmlPoxjXIrLpYllVwG3RxZehTSG8TI-nSXYc Great move, obviously. Especially for me with my planned trip to the Outer Hebrides. Looks like space for at l...

Re: Camping touring vs B&B touring - how much extra weight?

Reading these posts, particularly the OP's, 2 comments. Firstly, you don't seem to have (cycle) camped before. I'd give it a try for s few nights somewhere local before deciding for your big trip. Secondly, do you want to camp, do you really want to camp? Might sound daft, but you'll be buying load...

Re: Camping touring vs B&B touring - how much extra weight?

Last time I did that Hebrides trip with a pal we credit card toured. We booked the first b&b, then after arriving and a shower we rang the next destinations b&bs to book for the following day and so on. No problems whatsoever but it may be different in school holidays or busier times. Watch...

Re: Camping touring vs B&B touring - how much extra weight?

I can think of tent, mat, sleeping bag. Wondered if I'd forgotten anything. Some people are suggesting stove. Anything else? Towel and whatever wash kit you'd expect to be provided at a B&B. I also take an extra set of clothes - If I'm B&B'ing I'm happy to wear one wash one as everything i ...

Re: Frame "prepping" - maybe daft question

I bought a Ridgeback steel frame and built it up. How would I know any of this work needed doing? I used a try square to check that the bottom bracket and head tube ends were, as far as I could tell, "square". I used a vernier guage to check the length of the BB shell was consistent, inter...

Re: Camping touring vs B&B touring - how much extra weight?

how much extra weight? how long is a piece of string? i think that rather stress too much over weight (many on here have been doing this stuff a while and have acquired lighter kit than you might want to buy at this point), considering the bulk of what you take is more pertinent. The camping gear w...

Re: Camping touring vs B&B touring - how much extra weight?

How low do our gears go on your bike ?? The lower your gears are, the easier it is to lug the extra few Kgs of camping gear up the last hill before the campsite. A lot of touring bikes have a first gear around the 25" range for this reason. How much do you want to spend on camping gear ?? And ...

Re: Camping touring vs B&B touring - how much extra weight?

Does your choice of bike have a bearing on the tour you do? If a racing / audax bike them credit card touring If touring, mountain or gravel bike with racks then camping will be on the cards. Also you can wild camp in Scotland and thus spend as much time sdpossible outside, so I would chose that. W...

Camping touring vs B&B touring - how much extra weight?

I'm planning a small cycle tour. Scotland, specifically the Outer Hebrides and maybe some of the west coast. In summer. I'm not a particularly experienced cyclist, and have never toured. But I've tested myself a little in the place I'm going to (on holidays) and 30 miles is fine. I could have done m...

Re: Jaywalking is now a thing in the UK

Don't blame motorists. I understand there were more people killed on the roads BEFORE the advent of the motorcar. Horse-drawn vehicles were the killer. This tells me you simply don't get it, you think might is right and that those with might have greater priority and entitlement to travel unencumbe...

Re: Jaywalking is now a thing in the UK

I think the Police wouldn't be interested at all (even if he'd knocked me down) - but I'm sure they'd be interested if I did it to them  So I'll pass on that opportunity  You could report it anyway. If you report it somebody at least has to make a record. And consider if it's worth cons...

Re: Jaywalking is now a thing in the UK

I could wait for the lights to change, but that will just delay me, and make no difference to the road traffic (other than be less frustrating to drivers). Or I could wait wait longer before pressing the request button in case there is a gap soon, But if there isn't a gap, I would then have a doubl...

Or that. To be honest two should be enough, after that it's stop and ask or something. Or stuff extra in a pannier.
