Re: Help for commuting

A 4 mile commute, just do it in your normal clothes on a basic hybrid or MTB. No need for expensive or specialty kit. Some cheap waterproofs for when it is really chucking down might be worth it but to be honest is doesn’t really rain very hard very often. Don’t over complicate this, you will only b...

Re: Can anyone recommend to me a breathable, brightly coloured & reflective waterproof jacket?

DWR coatings can be ‘refreshed’ by cool ironing or a cool just warm tumble dry. Nikwax make products that can reapply the DWR coating. Just remember though effect ventilation is far more effective than any ‘breathable’ fabric and in rain (when you would expect to wear these things) the breathability...

Re: Heat transference between layers (when camping)

For best performance: Use high quality air bed (like Therma Rest Neo Air series, they have various cold ratings and they are very durable and easily repaired if worst happens) Use down quilt - down underneath is waste of time as it compresses to nothing - with sufficient rating for expected temperat...

You are living with them if you buy any imported goods.

Re: Help! People + cycles transport needed Bristol -> Portsmouth

Why don’t you cycle to Portsmouth, it would only take a day and a bit of easy cycling maybe less depending on your fitness and gear weights? You seem quite happy to be cycling multiple days in France?

Re: Help me get on my bike? Advice on commuting via Paddington

20 minutes from Paddington to Moorgate during working hours? That sound very optimistic! Euston road would be the easiest road, but it's not great. I am not very familiar with the "Cycle Highways" or whateverthey call them, but I'd probably try to go through back roads to Regent's park, P...

Re: Help me get on my bike? Advice on commuting via Paddington

I commuted from Maidenhead to London (Westminster) through Paddington for a few years and used two cheap bikes, one at each end. Both were scratched second hand hybrids but drivetrains were good and I looked after them so reasonably efficient. No hills on your London route to speak off so no real ne...

Re: High Court confirms loophole in mobile phone driving law

‘Using’ a mobile phone in your hand clearly includes any and all of its functionality irrespective of what purpose you are pursuing. This judgement simply ignores the intent behind the legislation that typing or pressing any buttons on a phone or the screen itself is distracting the driver from what...

Re: Road sign "cyclists dismount"

If cycle lane is closed I’d just cycle on the road where the cars go - is that actually illegal in any circumstances (other than motorway)?

Re: Utility Cycling

If my town, around 15000 population, is anything to go by, then free or very cheap parking is seen by local shops as ESSENTIAL to their prosperity. Any hint of restrictions or reductions on parking or general access for cars is met by howls of ‘the end of the world is nigh’ whereas there appears to ...

Simply cycle in accordance with the Highway Code and be be courteous and considerate to other road users; I do exactly the same when i’m driving my car, it’s no mystery. Such a shame that some others believe that the rules don’t apply to them,

Re: A very light sentence for this behavior?

Looking at the video it appears that the driver made an earlier attempt to turn in on the cyclist as he was passing up the left hand side of the car, then came back for another go. This is an assault plain and simple, the weapon just happens to be a car and should have been treated as such - would a...

Let’s have them on every TL junction, and set so go up 1 millisecond before end of amber (I was initially feeling generous with 1 millisecond after red light shows).

Re: Red means STOP! or How I began to hate cyclists.

So after 35 years of this, does anyone think we can eradicate RLJs?? I live west if London just outside M25, RLJ ing is endemic - there should be cameras on every set of lights as far as I am concerned with FPNs issued automatically and commensurate extra penalty for those that repeat. I don’t care...
