Re: Hadrian's Wall Cycle Route 72 - Would love Feedback on my Video

You almost went past my front door when you got off the ferry between South and North Shields, I use it from time to time. Sadly I wasn't at home, I was in Carlisle that weekend. You had a shot of a rally car being loaded onto a trailer, they were taking part in the Pirelli rally in Kielder forest.

Enjoyed the vid, had a few laughs with you and at you. Good stuff guys, and I don't have a beard anymore.

I'll never forget it
Back in around 2003 I did Northumbrian castles 300K. Lasting memories of sewage overflowing outside the door into a Wooler chippy. Then I got to Amble where Vegetables stored within the staff toilet, without hand washing bowl, in . I've a strong constitution but someone I was riding with didn't eat another thing after visiting the loo.

It is a lovely county though beautiful coastline and is the cycling cafe still there in Elsdon? :D

If you went to Elsdon, did you go up to the Gibbet? Cracking climb.

baucutts wrote:Thanks again for all the replies- I now have almost all my kit sorted, changing the tyres up 2mm in the next couple of days, some new bar tape to go on too. Sounds like canals aren't going to be my friend, as I'm looking to be fairly quick, just with a rather roundabout route.

Wilberforce- I was planning on heading out just to get some time riding the coast up there, and then guarantee a flat run in to Morpeth, but if it's not worth it then I'll go with your suggestion! Also I start the 29th June, so will PM you when I'll likely be up near Newcastle, always happy to have people to ride with for any part of it!

Seb

Hi Seb,

I take your point, and had a ride along the coast last night and agree it can be quite nice by the coast but it was quiet busy, also, it's got a couple of small hills heading towards Morpeth, that the inland route doesn't have. My thoughts on the inland route are down to lighter traffic.

Also, I'm really sorry about your bike. Really hope you get something sorted, and soon.

Day 7: To Morpeth. A fairly short distance but quite a lot of climbing. Investing in climbing early I think. Detour via Newcastle football club and the North Sea.

Hi Seb, I live on Tyneside but will never take on a journey like yours. Full marks to you for doing this (and anyone else who does Le Jog).

Re the route after the Toon, I'm puzzled if you have a specific reason from not heading north after visiting hallowed ground aka, St James' Park and heading down to the coast.

I'd think that leaving SJP, you'd head due(ish) north via Gosforth, Wideopen, Stannington, or a little further west via Dinnington. I'd be happy to join you for some of the route, dependant on when it is.

PM me if you feel I can help.

It's debatable. If it was an incorrectly-used motorway sign, it would use the motorway typeface, which it doesn't, so it's an "information" sign (like "CYCLISTS DISMOUNT"). What's strange is that it's on the roundabout and I think it's an offence to pass such a prohibition sign (even on foot because of the walking prohibition) and an offence to go backwards around the roundabout, so anyone cycling is in a no-win situation, so I feel the sign and, as a consequence, restriction are probably unenforceable. It's still probably nicer to use the A199, as well as about a mile shorter - it would be nice if some cycling route was signed from the restriction.

Totally agree on the A199, minimal traffic.

Re: South Shields Ferry

Just new on here, but catching up with local threads. I use the ferry from time to time, if I think on, I'll next time I'm down there, I'm only a few minutes from the North Shields side. I could use it as an excuse to go out, watch this space.

Re: Ovingham to the coast and back

I know this is a bit past it, but the bonus of going to the coast and back is that it is pretty much flat, apart from the uphill bits  and they aren't bad unless you head into the city centre directly from the riverside, Grey Street was used in the TOB or maybe the Milk Race (showing my age), actually sure it was the Milk Race.

I take your point about the derelict areas, but there isn't that much really. I'm towards the coast, close to the ferry and ride up to Wylam and back along the riverside from tiem to time. I do venture north west as well but prefer to drive out beyond the built up area and park to the north or NW of the Toon.

He did it!!

He got to the finish at Trecco Bay, Porthcawl this afternoon and has raised over £53,000. Apparently, a guy handed him cheque for £1,000 as he passed him.

Yes that's correct.

Met up with the guy in Newcastle last night, expected to find he had a support team with him, but it is only 2 guys in an estate car. This guy is doing it on his own. I cycled most of the way from the city centre to his overnight halt last night. I admit it isn't something I would do. It was a bit scary as I cycled back in the dark on my own but huge respect for the guy..

Wyatt from Planet Rock

I'm just wondering if anyone on here listens to http://www.planetrock.com/ on DAB.

One of the DJ's, a guy called Wyatt Wendells is cycling from London to Porthcawl, South Wales via Edinburgh & Glasgow to name a couple of places, with the aim of raising £40,000 for CALM - The Campaign Against Living Miserably - https://www.thecalmzone.net/

It would be great to give him some support on his journey which you can see on his website - http://www.wyattwendels.com. It's a heck of a challenge.

I hope to catch up with him on Sunday on the little leg from Newcastle to his overnight halt near Morpeth in Northumberland.
