My most recent tent purchase was made in Vietnam...

Agree, if it fails it does not matter where it is made or what brand it is. You have to cope with that no matter.

Water is heavy! I'd think in the bottom of a pannier might be better for weight distribution..

Caravanners do it with a sealed plastic bucket.. rear part of van has the most 'action'.

As for hotels .. those usually have a shower .. while you wash yourself .. put your cloths under your feet and wash them too. If you and the cloths are dirty enough get into the shower with the cloths on and wash with cloths on untill most of the dirt is gone .. then take cloths off and stand on them. .. Drying is done using the hotels towel .. wring out the cloths to get most of the water out tnen wring out inside the hotels towel.. then room dry.

A few hotels allow guest to use the hotels laundry facilities .. always pays to ask.

Re: When you run out of money…

Running out of money shows poor planning. Go home!

It is highly unlikely that you can legally make more real money (payment-expenses) in some foreign country. At home your qualifications and job experience are recognised and you have reasonable knowledge of the job market, how to live economically. This should maximise your making of real money that you can use. So go home, make money so you can go on holiday..

There are few exceptions.. I prefer a more cautious approach.

 Another pair of panniers and another cat could go on the front...

I'd be calling for a taxi.

A group here for Sunday service watched a strange ship drop anchor from the heavens, which became entangled around a gravestone. One of the crew jumped overboard and headed towards the anchor, moving as if swimming. Witnesses grabbed the stranger as he reached the ground; he struggled briefly before drowning, even though on dry land. The remaining crew in the ship severed the rope of the anchor and sailed away; the strange artefact was melted down and used to make the hinges on the local church doors.

I don't believe a word of it.

I'll have some of what they were drinking/smoking :D

Most use the climate data to figure out the 'normal' wind direction.

Of course only 'normal average' people get the climate, the rest of us get the 'weather'. and that is a little or a lot different from the climate.

Re: Cooking on small gas camp stoves

For porridge I use those Aldi instant oat packets 'Oat Sensations'. Boil water .. tare top off packet, put packet into my cup (yes - the paper containing the oats) . Poor water into paper container. Eat from paper container .. it is water proof. The cup gives stability and heat retention. When finished - open out the paper and consume the dregs. Usually 2 of them suffice for a quick breakfast. No washing up other than the spoon which is licked fairly clean anyway.

I like to use the toilet before I order - that way have clean hands, and am more relaxed. Not usually a problem that I recall in doing that anywhere.

Did it again - just to be sure I was doing it wrongly.

As I said, my help would make for a lively debate.

I press the quote button - no highlighted text - you get the complete thing as shown above then you can edit it ... like

That works and probably with less errors. The problem you had with the original message looks to me like there was no end of the quote - done with a [ / before quote]

I imagine these, and the modern ones, took hygiene into account, and have a valve which cannot be left open.

Sometimes called 'bubblers'. The original 'bubblers' had no publicly accessible valve and ran most of the time, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benson_Bubbler

In country areas of Australia drinking water frequently comes from household tanks that are nominally filled from roof run off. Many prefer it to 'town water'.

Sweep wrote:My question though was about faster charging powerbanks. Are there any disadvantages with regard to battery health?

The theory is 'fast charging' any battery shortens it life.

Having said that ... I believe most of the 'damage' is done as the battery gets hot, so initially -when the battery is cooler- fast charging does little harm and gets you good benefits, just turn the charger back to 'normal' charging after that initial period.

Re: Reducing pack size for credit card tour

Your not taking a spare chain, cable, etc probably because you think you can get to a bicycle shop if you need them. Use the same thinking for the second spare tube, etc. If you use the spare tube, seek a bicycle shop - buy 2 and throw the used one away. While your there .. take a look at the jerseys they have you may find one you like (I like to collect these kind of useful souvenirs).

Re: Posting Bike ahead (Budapest)

You can send it to yourself 'Poste restante'. If the post office will accept it (could be too big, or the responding post office does not do Poste restante ... and the charges might be higher than flying 2 bikes... If you do go Poste restante, select a specific post office .. not just 'Budapest' as it will have quite a few post offices ... I spent a day in Athens once tracking down my parcel.

Yes air lines will fly 2 bicycles .. but it will cost you. Best to pre pay - could be cheaper that way, and they will know the luggage is coming. Sometimes they may not have space on the plane .. so a bike or 2 might arrive later.
