Re: Why do certain subjects appear to be forbidden on this forum?

I have a lot of sympathy for the OP here. I too have simply turned away from a number of threads on here once "the usual suspects" get onto their very tedious hobby horse - whatver it may be. I moderate a forum in another area - much larger than this, 5,000 unique logins per day, over 40,0...

Re: Shared path guidance

I use shared access paths a lot - in particular the Wirral Way. I find most walkers react fine to single ping of the bell combined with slowing down a little. Most pedestrians correctly perceive it as simply a statement "I am here". I always thank people for taking approriate action to hel...

Re: Pub wanting to go cycle friendly

Things mentioned - secure bike parking, pump, small range of tools avaulable for loan, small range of spares. Recharging for bike assessories? Wide selction of lighter foods and snacks (sensible high energy snacks), bottle refills, good selction of non-alcoholic drinks - not just fizzy ones! And hot...

Re: E-Bike Battery

Yes - Lipos have cell memory. Not as bad as NiCad's in the old days but still an issue. Lipos should be charged to storage level - approx 60% - if not in use for 3-4 weeks or more. Less time than that isn't really an issue. So the the best solution for your friend is why not give the bike a ride onc...

Re: Considering alternative to Gels, etc.

"rubbish" eh - well, don't beat about the bush - I mean speak your mind! I posted this originally with my tongue firmly planted firmly in my cheek. It's raised some interesting side lines in terms of what some folks actually do eat on the bike. But its also revealled to me that some in the...

Re: York Rally 2017

I enjoyed my first York Rally -it was fun. But, and I really don't mean to be negative i am trying to be positive, its a bit of a "well kept secret" isn't it!!?? What I mean is that the attendance was hardly massive - I've seen more people at a village fete!! Well, not quite but you know w...

Considering alternative to Gels, etc.

On bike energy supplements - right? Gels, that seems to be the modern answer. We see the pro's ripping the top off an energy gel pouch with their teeth and squirting it into them (the Gel, not the pouch). Now, yesterday I was having a coffee in Morrisons - as you do. I decided I'd treat myself to a ...

Another vote for the "Big Blue Book" - really excellent. Everything you need is in there and laid out/illustrated and explained very well.

Re: Newbie having problems. Advice please?

Easy this one! 1. Cycling should be fun. 2. To be fun you have to be happy on the bike. 3. You are clearly not happy on this bike. 4. Ergo - you need a new bike! Simples! So,....start looking around,....try out some bikes you like, note that "you like" bit! Its you that is going to ride it...

Re: Newbie help please

Well - the "take it easy at first" advice is definatly sound! I had a similar - but not the same - experience. I had an illeostomy in Jan 2016 because I have colon cancer. In other words I am no longer built as other men in the plumbing department - I have "a bag"! This operation...

Re: Top tube frame bag

I use the Halfords triangular frame bag. I find it fine. Its currently holding; a cable bike lock, a pad of tissues, puncture repair kit and a multitool. When parked up I can easily fit my lights and bike-computer in there out of sight. And there is still room for more. It also cleans up nicely just...

Re: Staying clean & maintained

Another vote for mudguards - they make an enormous difference to how much dirt gets into bad places! But even with them I find the bike needs a good thorough wash and a quick light lube once a week, if I'm out 3-4 times in that week.

Re: Man and his best friend

I had another interesting one yesterday! Riding along on a shared use track I hadn't been on before. Suddenly from around a bend appears a boxer (a dog - not a bloke in shorts jabbing the air!) off the lead and bounding towards me! Can I avoid? No. So brakes on - the dog is arriving so quick it turn...

Re: Workshop service

I know that a lot of people are negative about Halfords - and often for good reason in that they have had very bad experiences - but I have to say that my experience of my local Halfords is been a very positive one. They are helpful, knowledgable and reliable. I think the reality is that you cannot ...
