Re: Your Cycling UK membership expires today.

I joined CTC in 1953.Today I cancelled my direct debit and shall not renew when membership runs out. CUK is no longer the homely touring orientated organisation I joined. Most of its aims and activities and magazine now are of no interest for me,but I maintained membership for the insurance benefit. However with the cessation of the senior reduced membership fee I have reluctantly jumped ship and sought better value free standing insurance elsewhere.

Re: Planet X reviews

I have bought most of my many and varied cycling needs from Planet X over the last 10 years. I have never had any problems with delivery and only one faulty item which was promptly resolved by email via customer services to my satisfaction. I suspect only disgruntled buyers post comments and most happy customers quietly carry on cycling.

Re: Cycle mag

A quick flick through whilst more adverts were on the ITV programme break, then straight to recycling (as last edition). Must remember to cancel subscription when due for renewal in August.I can still remember how I eagerly awaited the magazines arrival when I first joined in 1953,but most good things have to come to an end.

Re: 170mm & 172.5mm cranks on Audaxy bikes

I once rode a 24hr time trial using a bike with 175mm cranks in day hours but changing bikes for the night to one with 170mm cranks. I could just tell the difference for a mile or so after each change but otherwise not noticeable. And I did win the event! I have an inside leg measurement of 33ins with size 10.5 feet if that is relevant. Both bikes were set up with similar BB to saddle top distance.

Re: Tandem brakes

Yes, mine are Sun Tour.No problems on tandems, but on solos I need to remember to apply steadily/carefully to avoid locking rear wheel on an unladen bike.

Re: Tandem brakes

We used a self energising cantilever brake on the rear of our tandems which we found very satisfactory.I also use one on my solo touring bike where it is anything too powerful. Some years ago they were being sold off cheaply by the importer so I acquired several spare as an insurance policy!

"My advice is take 1500mg of Gloucosamine Sulfate with Condriotin daily,Omega 3 oil(not Cod liver oil)"

Any peer reviewed evidence that these have any useful effect other than placebo?

I stayed there in 1957 with 2 mates, one of whom was the tallest man in Sheffield at 6'9".I was 6'2"" and found the bunk space between the cabin walls a bit short. He had great difficulty!

Why bother unpacking the magazine? Just put it in the recycling without wasting time on it.

Re: recognizing an old steel bike - pictures added

It looks exactly like an old Hercules frame I got from a scrap yard in 1955.I subsequently built it up with 26x1.25 wheels and a Benelux 3 speed derailleur to use for cyclo cross.Eventually one seat stay broke off the seat lug.so the scrapyard got it back!

Turbo trainer apps advice

I have acquired a Wahoo Kickr and am looking for advice on the most appropriate apps to suit my needs. I am 82 and post hip replacement and cardiac arrest 3 years ago,so serious training is irrelevant, but am still interested in the numbers.I mostly ride alone on the road but am competent in bunches as long as I can keep up,last year I was doing 26 or 27 minute 10mile TTs but nothing this year.As I feel the cold more nowadays I wont go out when it is<5C,snow,or very windy so intend to use the turbo in the garage to maintain fitness.Research so far suggests the choice lies between Zwift and Rouvy. Sensible comments please!
