Re: Belfast to Lough Erne

Depends if you looking to go direct, which part of Lough Erne you're going to and whether you prefer traffic free or not. Obvious start is to follow national cycle route 9 out of Belfast. It's mainly off-road following the Lagan towpath. If not trying to go direct you can follow southerly route 91 t...

Re: Mournes and County Down

Then I would suggest Annalong, Newcastle, Downpatrick, Killyleagh, Comber. From Comber there's a mainly traffic free cycle path all the way into Belfast harbour following the Comber Greenway http://www.cycleni.com/d/routes/37/Comber%20Greenway%20Map%20Whole.pdf The main A24 from Newcastle through Ba...

Re: Mournes and County Down

Here a couple of my rides that should be useful. You could use the first one to do a loop through the Mournes from Annalong. Just cut across from Bryansford to Newcastle. The second one is the route for the 2016 Gran Fondo. Its a hilly route but avoids main roads and will take you right to Belfast h...

Re: Charging whilst cycling touring??

I use iPhone 6 and charge it directly from my Dynamo/ewerk. Works well with none of the problems I read about with iPhones.
I tend to charge the phone until 100% then charge my powerbank for the rest of the day.

Re: Strangford Lough (East Side)

The coast road is reasonably flat until a few miles before Portaferry. Then there a few longish climbs but not too steep. The only real climbs on R99 are coming out of Newtownards. So what you could do is stay on the coast road to Greyabbey, then go east on the B5 to meet R99 and follow it south fro...

Re: Strangford Lough (East Side)

I cycle on it frequently. It can be busy with day trippers on Sat or Sunday or if there's a big event at Mountstewart. But it's not dangerous or to be avoided and the Lough views are nice. Having said that R99 down through the middle of the peninsula is quiet and pleasant cycling. What's your concer...

Re: River Danube cycle way or Belgium cycle routes?

From comments Danube route seems one for older people not our 6 year old son. Belgium probably offers more because we're not fixed to any single route. If we did the Danube it would be the German section to passau iirc. Anyone done that stretch? Seems everyone does the Austrian section. I've done t...

Re: New solar charger, Power pack or both?

Can't advise on the solar panel as I've not used one. I use iPhone 6 for navigation with a dynamo hub and e-werk to keep it charging through the day and this powerpack to charge it fully overnight. https://www.amazon.co.uk/imuto-Portable-Charger-20000mAh-External-X4-Black/dp/B017U9ANJQ/ref=sr_1_3?cr...

Re: Cycling to Berlin via Holland

3) With screen on the phone battery loses about 5% every 10 minutes Wow. That's really really fast. Mine uses about a third of that, on a smaller battery than an iPhone 6 (1,810mAh in iPhone, 1350mAh in my phone). But even so, screen off as much as possible. Last week I stopped to buy gas. I left t...

Re: Cycling to Berlin via Holland

Re using smartphone for navigating while camping. Keeping it charged is likely to be significant issue. Every phone, usage, app etc will be different but here's my experience. 1) I use iPhone 6 running RidewithGPS app charging on the move by Dynamo and Ewerk 2) At touring speed the Dynamo is able to...

Re: Danube Cicerone routes

Quite possible the route has been changed/upgraded, sometimes the paths are closed for building work Best to get up-to-date information and enquire locally I've just returned from touring there. Both options are open although both rivers are very high at the moment so you may get local flood divers...

Re: Danube Cicerone routes

Actually just looked at a map and I see that the cycle route goes from Rennertshofen to Dollnstein.
The Dollnstein area is my favourite part of the Altmuh route so that would be my recommendation.

Re: Danube Cicerone routes

Does the old route leave the Danube at Rennertshofen? Where does it join the Altmuhl? I've cycled both valleys a few times and much prefer the Altmuhl to the Danube. You'll have to climb a bit to get from Danube over to the Altmuhl but nothing serious. If you stay on the Danube there is no riverside...
