I read your "but" in this sentence as implying that eloquence and academic qualifications add weight to a man's opinions, and that these qualifications are a defence against a charge of racism.
I was pointing out an glaring exception in Powell.

Oh right, I see what you mean. In this instance and with this person I am referring to his eloquence and obvious knowledge does add weight to me. You can obviously ignore that.

I was only referring to his explanation of how immigration (he says) was used to ease the labour shortage and subsequent increased costs following the second world war.

He further says this relatively large immigration in a similarly short period of time, plus how the immigrants had to be housed is what fuelled tensions in those who saw themselves, rightly or wrongly, being placed second.

This seems to me to be much the same as what Carlton was saying in the first post quoted above.

So, I'm merely saying that, racist or not, he seems to be giving a reasonable explanation of why there may have been tensions in communities somewhat unused to a large influx of people different to themselves.

I was not talking about Enoch Powel.

I know that perfectly well thank you. It also does not mean that what they say is necessarily wrong, does it?

I have no idea whether Carlton Green is a racist or otherwise. But I do know a very eloquent man who has a History degree who describes immigration in the last century more or less exactly as Carlton does.

Re: Gas stove or petrol?

Regarding Coleman petrol stoves, I have a duel fuel Sportster. The control of the flame is very good, especially when compared to my MSR Whisperlite which always sounds like a rocket taking off and looks like one too.

I've never used Coleman fuel, only unleaded. This tends to soot up a bit, but no blockages.

Only ever use a gas Pocket Rocket now, less faff.

I think that is actually what I was saying.

If either of us were that smart and able, we would be professors instead of people with time on their hands posting opinions on an internet forum
.

That's true. :(

Having said that, it's looking to me (as a complete amateur) that lockdowns don't work, at least not in the UK (that's just by going on what's shown on the BBC news). But who knows? :?

I see that a moderator has deleted the post from which Horizon quoted above. My post included an important qualifier after the first sentence quoted by Horizon. What I said, and underlined for emphasis, was
You couldn't prove it because you are simply neither intelligent enough nor sufficiently qualified to be able to perform such an analysis. And nor am I

Must admit when I read that I thought something was a bit off. Thanks for clarifying.

Re: Air Pollution - Will They Act Now?

My son has just moved from a flat with permit parking. It just made it difficult to visit. His car got scratched and a snotty note left just because someone wanted the spot he parked in.
Now he's in a house with two parking spaces behind on a new estate, but even that isn't ideal although far better. His parking spaces don't abut his property so he couldn't run a power lead to his car, if he ever wanted to and the builders (Taylor Whimpey in his case) haven't provided power or even duct for the future as far as I can see. So short sighted, you'd have thought the government would have at least made them do that.

Re: Air Pollution - Will They Act Now?

Garden ponds aren't public highways. Anyway, a quick perusal of the HSE website says that a cable should be surrounded by 75mm of sand. I think they will struggle with terraced roads.
I wonder if battery technology will progress to the point where they are small and light enough to take indoors and charge overnight, obviously they will have to be cheap too. Or at least manageable enough to swap over in a filling station for a charged one.

Re: How's your weather?

Glorious weather here today so I cycled to my sons new house with a Christmas card, thirteen miles each way. Lovely ride, slightly marred by low sun ahead combined with a wet road for a mile or so. Fortunately there had been an accident at the junction with the bypass so only a few cars came past. Don't enjoy that though.

I don't think they would allow a mains cable in a drain somehow.

Re: Air Pollution - Will They Act Now?

An EV would suit me fine, even better solar power as well. Just put off by the cost. I know you can get a Nissan Leaf second hand reasonably cheap, but that would mean taking a bit of a hit on the money I spent on my present car. Plus I want to put a 16ft canoe on the roof.
I've wondered about solar panels a lot, but my roofs face east and west (there is a house on a new estate nearby with panels facing west, those were installed at the time of the build, I wonder how good they are).

Re: Air Pollution - Will They Act Now?

We used to run temporary telephone cables across paths and roads, covered in a protective strip. But what sort of voltage is in a charging cable? Presumably low, otherwise I can imagine trouble ahead....

Do people really want to keep driving into them, or is there a lack of practical alternatives?

Air pollution is a matter delegated to local government, which also gets income from operating municipal car parks which tend to be in the centres of those congested towns and cities. It's a lethal conflict of interest.

People want to drive for the sake of convenience, because it's what they are used to, *and* a lack of practical alternatives.

The more practical alternatives are made, and the less convenient driving is made, the more people will use alternatives.

Exactly this. That very convenience has a very high value on it as well, it will be hard to persuade people away from cars in my opinion.
The best suggestion I heard was the one about ubiquitous autonomous electric cars summoned by an app. I could imagine people going for that, as long as they were prompt and cheap.

Re: Head torches - dazzled by inconsiderate users

I use a head torch when running around town at night. I only need it in the areas where there are no street lights, and have only recently started using it as I'm ageing and my legs are not so strong. Mine shines about six feet ahead so I don't see how it could dazzle anyone without me really lifting my head up, unless the beam spread is pretty wide. No comments from anyone yet though.
Incidentally, before I started using one I never had a problem as my eyes adjusted reasonably well, and I recovered pretty well from the odd stumble.

Someone I walk with always brings a torch so if we finish in the dark he can see where he's going - the only problem is, if I'm behind my eyes are constantly trying to adjust between too much light and not enough! Generally have to hang back a bit to keep out of it.

Re: What’s The Most useful Foreign Language?

It would be French for me, having been there three or four times. Would love to be able to converse easily. However, I'm hopeless.
As it happens, we are set to have a Portuguese daughter in law. We have visited her family and, again, I would love to learn the language and have been trying. But I think for me the only way would be immersion, so to speak.

Aside from that, German would be useful I think.
