Energy bars and energy fluids

What do people think are the most effective ways to keep fuelled up on a long ride? I've found what I believe to be relatively low cost solutions. I note some dedicated energy bars and fluids can be very pricey indeed.

It was a suggestion for on-the-road nutrition, (no, not my stuff but I think naming the supermarket source was maybe a mis-step!)

I got one virtually identical from a local bike shop (slightly higher price); excellent for home use; very sturdy and you can position the bike extremely high up for very easy access.
(What's the rule on recommending products on this forum? I got a mild spanking with my first post!)
