Re: New Galloway - Newton Stewart via Loch Clatteringshaw

NCN 68 north of Once Brewed, the route becomes a forest track, but a very very bad and used forest track. Once you reach the bit accessible by forestry lorries it becomes OK again. Again, the same route south of Wooler. We tried to do it on loaded tourers and had to abandon the route and lay on a b...

Re: Pictures of your tents.

Here's my almost 30 year old Pheonix Phlighter A, pitched in May this year at Tan Hill. I bought the tent second hand for £80 in 1991 in "As new" condition having only been used for 1 week by a Scout doing DofE. ancient a bit like myself though that's where the similarity ends as it is sti...

Re: Different Distances MTB vs Hybrid vs Road Bike

I reckon based on time riding at the same effort that 1km on an MTB off road is the same as a mile on the road bike...or a distance on an MTB off road is the 1.5x on the road. You can fiddle that into average speeds: 12mph off-road is the same as 18mph on. +1 for this both my wife and I have found ...

Re: Bike racks on buses

I can think of a few bus drivers I'd liked to have seen on a rack

Stagecoach X services in particular

Just saying

Re: 30 yo tent

I've a Pheonix Phlighter A from the early 90s. Just had it up for a spring check this last weekend. All good so treated it to a new Tyvek footprint for this year. So far only changed the peg loops and given it a proofing spray every 4th or 5th season. Pity Pheonix went down as this tent has been fan...

Re: Lancaster to Edinburgh

Thanks all for info really useful. One alternative that has been brought to my attention would be baling east from Tan Hill on track to Sleightholme, would anyone know if this is rideable downhill? It could be a useful shortcut if conditions are poor or I'm knackered !

Re: Lancaster to Edinburgh

That looks like a great route sunnydunny. High tees force well worth visiting especially after the rain. The section from alston to haltwistle you can follow route 68 an old rail track if not mistaken 20 miles or so. Steel rigg on hadrians wall after haltwistle worth a look. I've camped there too a...

Re: Lancaster to Edinburgh

Hi all Thanks for the suggestions much appreciated and have helped me focus. Now thinking along the lines of Ingleton, Hawes, Aysgarth, Castle Bolton, Tan Hill. Kirby Stephen, Middleton in Teesdale, Alston and Haltwhistle. Taking in Hadrian's Wall westward then up over Eskdalemuir and home territory...

Lancaster to Edinburgh

I'm planning a 1 week tour in June and thought Lancaster to Edinburgh could be interesting. I'll be wild camping where possible any suggestions would be welcome. Dodgy knee so not too much climbing preffered but I'd like to go via Tanhill if possiblle and daily miles about 60 and sticking to roads. ...

Re: Bus near miss - resolved

I have a folder and inch thick of similarly worded letters from Stagecoach. I have had meetings with them and Police Scotland in attendance and after years of pleading with Stagecoach and the Police I have given up trying to improve the driving characteristics of their drivers and their insincere Ma...

Re: Should bicycle lights be redesigned?

I'm all for well designed and regulated bike lights I commute daily on road and cycle paths into the centre of Edinburgh. For me it's a toss up for what's worst. Bike riders ( I refuse to call them cyclusts) with retina burning flares front and this winter rear facing also with what seems like a par...
