Re: I hate disc brakes - help!

I feel your pain ( to an extent ). The only time I would choose disc brakes, would be on a mountain bike. I absolutely hate them on road bikes. Which is ironic, because I was ( unfortunately) forced into discs on my best road bike. It’s ‘progress’ nahhh it’s not my bag.

Heart rate, is so yesterday. It’s like working out how much sugar is in a cake by tasting it. It’s far better to measure the sugar. Power is where it’s at #unpopularopinion.

Re: Covid Choice

Covid is well and truly endemic now. All you can really do is maintain your vaccinations, and hope for the best. It’s sensible not to tempt fate, and avoid deliberate contact with an infected person, if possible, especially if you’re in a vulnerable group, so I think you did the right thing here.

If it had this upgraded avionics package

Landing it would have been like shelling peas ( with a blindfold on admittedly). I still wouldn’t have fancied it though.

At the end of the article is says this:

The author, Irina Rastorguyeva, born in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, lives in Berlin. Her book “The Russian Simulacrum” will be published by Matthes & Seitz soon.

I would expect her book will have been checked to some level of likelihood and accuracy. And her article is far from the only one which has reported on Russian brutality and corruption in the further remote reaches of the country.
Pinning everything squarely on the Russians is probably wrong. I don’t like what Russia are doing, however, I believe that a lot of the worst stuff is being perpetrated by Mercs, usually originating in Africa. It’s not the Russian military way to behave like that ( against civilians at least).
Really? I think a lot of the women of Berlin (and elsewhere in Germany) in 1945 would disagree with that. Anthony Beevor is a well respected historian, read his book "Berlin, The Downfall", if you would like to see your cosy view corrected.

This isn’t the Russians against the Germans ( who they hated with an exceptional passion, for good reason ). This is Russian ( conscripts for the most part ) who run away, abandoning their equipment, as soon as possible, against an ‘enemy’ who most of them don’t want to be fighting. If you don’t see the difference, I suggest you may want to look more carefully. The Mercs are quite willing to pick up abandoned Russian kit, and pile in, all guns blazing. A lot of the ‘Russian atrocities’ almost certainly aren’t. I’ve no doubt the Elite end of the Russian military are capable and willing to go in harder, but I’d be amazed if most of the really grim stuff in this conflict, is actually being perpetrated by the Russians.

Re: Are the springs on disc brake pads cross compatible?

The springs aren’t strictly necessary. I have some very nice pads ( with heat sinks ) for my Magura / Bianchi brakes, that don’t come with springs, and they function perfectly well without them.

Re: Untrained passenger lands plane

Most of the process is computer controlled on modern aircraft. Stay calm, let the GPS do it’s job. I wouldn’t want to be in that situation, but trying to make out that the landing was in some way a miracle is pure media hype. Well done to the guys involved, it was a nasty situation, but no great shakes, in reality.

That has barely changed since the 60s. That's before many members here were born.
The number of nuclear weapons in the world has declined very substantially "since the 60s"

Loads of them won’t work anymore either.

I sobering story though not entirely surprising in the least.
It’s also totally fake propaganda.

ISIS have been twiddling their thumbs of late, I’d be amazed if some of it isn’t their doing.

Take it out with a stiff brush, then apply loads of TCP. It hurts like hell, but it’s better than it getting infected.

Tried tubeless in various guises on the mountain bikes and it always failed.Always carried two spare tubes anyway so it made sense to go back to tubed.
I can see absolutely no reason for me to go tubeless.
It annoys me slightly when the CC guys who run tubeless don't carry a spare tube because 'someone else will have one'.
I’ve got one tubed tyre, and one tubeless on the bike at present. The difference is actually very noticeable. The tubed tyre feels a lot more draggy. It’s particularly noticeable cornering.

Yes, initially, but once I’d got the sealant out, and wiped my hands, it wasn’t so bad.

The front tyre failed exactly how the rear did, on a 100Km bank holiday Monday ride. Fortunately I had a tube with me this time.
It’s the exact same failure, the tyre had perished around the circumference, from the inside. It’s almost exactly 2 years since I installed them as tubeless, so I guess I can’t argue too much.

Re: War on Our Doorstep: How do we respond?

You’ve also got to remember that there are a lot of mercenaries operating in Ukraine at present. It’s unlikely that all ( or indeed any ) of the atrocities reported thus far, are down to the Russians. That’s really not their way. The Russians have been dumping kit all over the place and running. The mercenaries are loose cannons, the Russians tend not to be. I’m not defending the Russians, they shouldn’t be there, I’m doubting the will and ability of the Russians to be doing most of the messy stuff that’s being reported.
