Thank you for all your inputs
I think I'll be keeping my Fondriest for winter and ropy days, (probably most of the year up here in the north west!).
I hear what you say about custom steel
I have my oldest bike, a traditional tourer with a Reynolds double but frame, which I wouldn't part with for any money, and I'll tour on 'til it's time to hang my cleats up.
But I think I'll stick to aluminium, maybe with a carbon fork.
I notice you can get a top end ally for the same money as an average carbon and aluminium is ok for me .
Thanks all, again.

What frame material for my new bike ?
Had me old Fondriest road bike since 2005.
Columbus aluminium frame, goodness knows what forks, all Campag bits.
Great bike, still do regular 60 mile+ rides on it.
This year's me 60th birthday, so thinking of treating myself to a new bike .
What do youze all think of carbon bikes?
Is it better to stick to ally or are carbon better?

Re: 25mm tyres
I think tyres used to go down to 18mm
They were for hardcore racers and we're tubular, glued to the rim
There was a chance they could come off when cornering
Never tried 'em
Too nutter, bonkers for me.
Thanks for all your replies.

Re: 25mm tyres
We'll said Foxy
You like to ride on what you're used to.
Yep
Not much left of roads these days
Maybe time for big thick, numb boring tyres again
🤔

Re: 25mm tyres
As a post script to the above, the big debate in my day was which combo of gear inches was best.
Happy cycling 😀

Re: 25mm tyres
Yep.
Virtually no difference
Been cycling 40 years and used most tyre sizes over the years, from touring to cycle touring on a touring bike to mountain biking on me m/b
Not a frequent peruser of tech cycling info, but have been struck by the volume of debate on this.
Nothing beats the sheer joy of hard pumped up 23 or 25s on a road bike, no matter what it's made of.
If you can tell the difference, then you're a better man than me 😉👍

25mm tyres
Is there honestly that much difference between 25mm and 23mm tyres?
Been using 23s for years in all weather's, even on tracks and canal bank, no problem.
On these tracks you can manage as long as you don't sit on the bike like a sack of spuds.
Just wondering.
Does 2 mm make that much difference?
Bemused by all the debate I keep coming across.

Re: Day ride brewing up tackle
Again thanks for the response and effort you've put into replying
I use an old racing bike for winter fast rides, I have a Carradice saddle pack which is just big enough for maybe a small cannister and brewing mug
I' be settled on a basic Primus gas burner that fits on a 100g gas.
It's got a stable looking base with wind deflectors to take a mug or my bialetti
It will fit in my crusader mug
The jetboil looks like one for my touring bike this summer
The meths burners are good and cheap but I can't be bothered carrying meths
Knowing me I'd probably burn something down! 😜

Re: Day ride brewing up tackle
Thanks Mat and Mike
Hadn't clocked your replies
I agree
I didn't realize there were such a variety of gas stoves
I envisaged the old camping Gaz bleu things
Thanks again for all your inputs 👍👍

Thanks for your replies
You can get tiny gas burners that you can stick in your pocket
There's small cannisters that fits ' em
All I need's is my metal mug and gas in the saddle pack
Happy days
Happy riding to you all

Re: Day ride brewing up tackle
Thanks Pete.
In summer I quite often use my Bialetti expresso coffee maker, for a posh brew. I have a worrying psychological hatred of flasks, but the Kelly Kettle looks like a wonderful piece of kit.
A hell of a thing to get in a saddle pack though.

Re: Day ride brewing up tackle
Thanks PH.
I'll have a look at these.
The fact that you can warm your hands as it brews, sounds marvellous
