Re: Solihull

Tanworth in Arden is a nice ride out. Fine pub by the church and village green.

 Most people don't buy cars based on such concerns. Few reviews ever mention it. Most cars are sold on unrealistic vague impressions (the feeling of driving on mythical empty roads on adverts), basic stats (tax band, a doctored mpg, boot dimensions and so on) and short test-drives with maybe quick glances under the bonnet. Only a few nutters like me bother to look for access to the important user-serviceable parts when looking under the bonnet and that's probably only because I'm a mechanic's son and inaccessible lights are getting pretty notorious.

When I bought my current car (VW Polo) I asked the salesman how would I change a lightbulb. He didn’t know, but I did since I’d read the handbook online.

If you haven’t got them, you’ll definitely want some decent mudguards for autumn in Wales.

I've got a spray can of the stuff, a throwback to the 70's when it was used quite liberally to clean stuff, especially electrical motors etc. We even use to gargle the stuff  oh hang on a minute wasn't that TCP!

I used to give anaesthetics with the stuff. Not missed in that application.

Does all that weight in the back wheel help you drift round corners?

Probably the plasticiser leeching out following exposure to heat and sunshine. Not a lot to do apart from fitting new hoods.

Re: Woman struck by hit-and-run cyclist in Dalston dies - BBC

A couple of observations. Firstly there are likely to very few cases which result in a conviction for causing death by dangerous cycling. It seems somewhat unnecessary therefore to oppose such legislation at the risk of giving ammunition to the anti-cycling lobby. Second illegally modified ebikes are likely to pose the biggest risk to other people on bikes if they are ridden at excess speed on bike paths, towpaths and the like where there is limited room to avoid a head on collision. Action by the authorities to get such machines out of circulation would therefore be welcome.

The Wellgo DMR V8 copies are pretty good for a tenner and come with reflectors.

I put a KMC ebike chain on one of my moultons that otherwise would need 2 bits of chains to be joined to get enough length. Must be the big ring and relatively long chainstays.

Re: Geraint Thomas....

There seems to have been a fair number of deaths of pro-cyclists from head injuries sustained during competition in the past few years. I would not be at all surprised if their population level risk has increased with compulsory helmet use.

This map is from the Glos. definitive rights of way map. Lots of blue bridle paths and that is good enough for me.
Restrictive signs are on (some) entrances to the woods

I thought you were referring to the area to the right of that map, which is strangely devoid of any PROW. The bit on the left is however a mass of footpaths and bridleways. I figured the very important landowner must therefore own the bit on the right, to which he had graciously granted those on foot or horseback access.

No public rights of way through there showing on the OS map, apart from a single yellow road.

I suppose I could go proper old skool and fit a purple anodised brake booster.
