Re: Quiet site near Loch Ness

I will stay with my wild camping and charge up at the cafe or pub, as usual having phoned up beforehand. The C and C club seems to favour totally ridiculous motor homes which probably shouldn't be anywhere near Scottish road. Unfortunately the NC500 has been far too successful and the Highlands are...

Re: Quiet site near Loch Ness

There is an outdoor activity centre South of Fort Augustus. Try there.

or a hostel

Re: Quiet site near Loch Ness

You could try the few pubs on the south east side. They may let you camp in their garden if you eat there?

Wild camping in that area is very easy.

Re: Quiet site near Loch Ness

Wild camp near Fort Augustus and try to use the Canal facilities at the locks? https://www.scottishcanals.co.uk/destinations/fort-augustus/ There is a YH on the north-west side above Drumnadrochit. https://abriachan-cafe-campsite-wester-laide.business.site/ Away from the loch but in a quiet location...

Re: Price points for sleeping bags, any ideas

All good advice above.

My experience years ago was to get a mummy shaped bag with no zip. Dreadful mistake as I hated being constrained. It was warm though.

I'd always go for at least a half zip and rectangular shape.

Re: Route and POI Planning

Great advice folks - many thanks. I won't be camping as I don't think my back will take sleeping on the ground even with a decent sleep mat. So I will be booking hostels, pensiones and cheap hotels a few days ahead. I've problem roughing it in cheap places. The route is as in another thread North Sp...

Route and POI Planning

I am long term planning my first (major) tour and am wondering how the seasoned tourers plan their routes and things to see/do along the way. This is a tour with a holiday theme. I am thinking that I'll cycle 5 days in every 7 and will cover 4000km. Assuming 80km per day average that is 10 weeks. I ...

Re: Ardrossan to Glasgow

Alternatively take the scenic route using the ferries.
Lochranza - Claonaig
Tarbert - Portavadie
Dunoon - Gourock

Then Bridge of Weir and Elderslie then Paisley Road.

Good bit longer but nicer.

Re: Cycling Holidays on Borrowed Cycle

I have hired a bike a few times for a cycling holiday. Not touring but just road riding so drop handlebars and carbon frame type bikes. The important thing is to make sure the bike is the right size and that the saddle height is right and that the reach to bars is correct. That means taking a few me...

Great service from your AirBnB host. Sounds like a fantastic holiday.

I'll look into that. May also look for a local Hotshowers host with a shed!

Re: Santander to Athens and beyond

It would be the mechanical stuff. Getting the bike to the check in wouldn't be an issue.

I could probably get a cycling buddy to pack the bike.

Re: Santander to Athens and beyond

Why don't you buy the wife a new bike from decathlon, there is one on Athens? You can get something suitable for about 450 euros then you can sell it when you get back to UK or keep it. I was thinking buy but didn't think of Decathlon. Cheers. I'm a trendy consumer. Just look at my SM-G930F using T...

Re: Santander to Athens and beyond

Cheers. I have travelled with a bike a few times so know what to do and know what to ask the LBS. Re-assembly also not an issue. Not overly worried about Brexit. Wife will have an Irish passport. I am sure plenty of people moved around Europe in the past. I'm a trendy consumer. Just look at my SM-G9...

Santander to Athens and beyond

I am formulating a plan for a post retirement tour. This will be in 4 years or so. My initial plan is to train from Scotland to Plymouth and then ferry to northern Spain. Then I'll start a (credit card) cycle tour to Athens aiming to arrive in Athens around the end of June. At the end of June my sch...
