Re: Knee Replacement

pete75 wrote: 21 Jun 2022, 8:35am I've a date through for my knee op in mid July. There's a lot in the press about long NHS waiting lists for this type of operation. In my experience this is untrue. Visited GP mid April, x-ray at the end of April, consultant appointment end of May, op scheduled for mid July. Would private be any quicker?
I hope this all goes to plan and you don't get messed about.
My exprience was quite frustrating. I received an appointment within twelve weeks of the consultant appointment only to have it cancelled three weeks before the date. I wasn't given any indication of how long I would need to wait for another appointment. I had already made arrangements to be off work from the original date and work had arranged cover for the period I was likely to be off. After 4 weeks of waiting and not knowing what was happening I received another appointed for two weeks time. When I arrived for the appointment I was told that two people had been booked for one bed but apparently I was the 'lucky' one to get the bed. I felt really bad for the other person who would have had all the anticipation and apprehension that goes with anything like this only to be let down.
At the time of my consultants appointment I asked what sort of timescale I could expect and I was told the target time was within twelve weeks but they were running four weeks behind. I could be wrong but I believe there was never any prospect of the first date ever being achieved but an appointment had to be given because of the target times.
I would hope that now target times have gone to pot because of Covid, appointments will be more likely to be realistic but I would still be concerned about double booking of beds.

Re: Hebridean Way: train to Oban return from Inverness

Presumably if you are starting from Edinburgh yoiu are aware of the current unreliabilty of the train service.
Hopefully all will be sorted by the time of your trip. Just the ferry reliability to worry about then

Re: Total knee replacement

Ask if there is a target time for you to receive your operation appointment and how behind they are on meeting the target.
Your life will be on hold until you have a date and even once you have an appointment it can be cancelled leaving you in limbo not knowing when another appointment is going to be landed on you.

Re: Total knee replacement

With regard to cycling you will know yourself what you can do and when.
You can't over bend the knee before the staples are removed. After that your increased movement needs to be proportionate to the healing of the wound.
I started on the turbo trainer just trying to encourage the knee to bend enough to get up and over the top of the pedal stroke . Once I managed that it was just a few turns of the pedals a day but building up a few additional strokes a fay until the knee was freed up.

Thanks for the heads up about the BBC Alba programme. That was proper touring.
Was able to understand without the text. Duolingo is paying off!

Going through Annan you will need to stay on the B 721 to get to the B724. The footbridge on cycle route 7 was washed away in a flood last night.

Re: Scotland to England

You may need to book the bike on the train. Regarding the map linked above, stay on the B7076 until Gretna, no need for the diversion.

Re: Calling the horticulturalists

Aquilegia comes back without any assistance. It's also a prolific self seeder. There is a huge range of colour types. They are at their best in may. The seed pods add a bit of height to flower beds in the winter but if you have a few plants they can very quickly take over. They don't necessarily come back the same colour as the year before due to being bee pollinated. Bees absolutely love them.

If you haven't had much to do with bikes I would suggest it may be good idea to attend a bike maintenance course.

Re: JOGLE - by foot!

I don't envy anyone trying to walk on roads in the north of Scotland this year. If lockdown is lifted and there is still no foreign travel, every man and his dog will be hiring camper vans to do the North Coast 500. This will be on top of the normal heavy traffic. The roads are not particularly walking friendly and regular road users don't expect to meet people walking on them.
Also be aware, Scotland has its own timetable for the lifting of restrictions and it is moving back to a tier system as lockdown lifts. There may be areas that will stay under restrictions for longer if covid numbers don't settle down.

Re: Osteoarthritis

Got it in both knees and hips, one elbow, wrist and finger joints. The time for intervention came when the most advanced knee became too painful to walk without taking painkillers. Despite exercising, bone was grinding on bone on one side of the knee causing the leg to noticably bow and puting strain on the hip on that side. I also couldn't get a full nights sleep due to the leg locking. Unlocking it was excrutiatingly painful so I had to take a painkiller at bedtime in anticipation of this happening. A half knee replacement sorted out a the pain from the knee but now that has gone I'm more aware of just how my hips and the other knee are progressing. :(
