Re: Cycling to Egypt

Egypt is in Burnham Beeches, near littleworth common. Some gypsies lived there and it was thought gypsies came from Egypt, hence one theory on how it got its name. It is overgrown with trees now, no pyramids anywhere.

Re: Base Training - anyone else still doing it?

My joggle was done in 25 mile chunks , which broke down into 75 mins to 2 hour rides. I did 3-4 chunks of this each day. You are already doing enough cycling to achieve this, just ride them under tempo pace and stay fuelled.

Re: Base Training - anyone else still doing it?

I spoke with Rod Ellingworth a couple of years ago and he told me team Sky do not do any base training because they get sufficient base while racing. Earlier this week I read that Chris Froome produces very little lactic acid at threshold, and so the focus for improving his form was to concentrate o...

Re: Why I like single touring

I love passing the time of day with folks I meet on route. If I can ride the odd mile with a friendly person, it provides me with a happy memory which stays with me for years. However committing myself to a group is different. If the group is too fast I get anxious if it is too slow I get bored .Som...

Just when you think

The penny farthing ride reminded me of someone I met in Scotland last year. I was resting after cycling up a long hill when I saw someone cycling up the other side. I waited for him, he pulled over , shared some pleasantries and then parted company. He was doing an end to end following the coast lin...

Re: Lost cadence

I use a wahoo sensor, more expensive than the magnet ones though. my shoe strap threads through it and so it should not fall off while my shoe is attached to my feet

Re: What's wrong with your bike

Regarding double chainsets, I usually shift 2-3 cogs on the rear cassette before changing the front, this keeps my cadence in a similar range . I do not know if it still happens but years ago, people would get frowned on for using the big ring in winter or the small one in summer, so cadence jumps w...

Re: Turbo Trainer Tyre Size

I am using a dedicated turbo tire, 23, 25, 28mm , the difference would not concern me . The tire is 3-4 years old now and used a lot in the winter, so it has been good value for money.

Re: LEJOG: would I enjoy it?

My route was based on the UK Cycling b&b route , with some deviations to booked B&B and friends and so my actual route would not be very helpful .I have the route on ridewithgsp but it is in 25 mile segments , which would be a lot of links to post when you can just check the route from the c...

Re: Overtaking roadies?

A couple of years ago I was huffing and puffing up this long drag , not racing up but riding my level best, a rider came flying up the hill, slowed and pulled up alongside gave a friendly greeting and then shot off into the distance, I could not understand how he managed to spin his gears so easily ...

Re: LEJOG: would I enjoy it?

The more rural the route, the less pubs, b&b, cafes and garden centres to snack and sleep. A balance needs to be found, but it should be easy enough to route avoiding any long stretches of A road or too long in big towns. My ride spent half a day going through Edinburgh, but other than that it w...

Re: Overtaking roadies?

Years ago I sold my bike and put the money towards my wedding. A few years later I came across this cheap raleigh bike that was too small for me, but would be a standbye if the car broke down. I took it out for a ride to try it out and overtook a couple of roadies. I was so pleased, I thought I must...
