Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
Limited parking, refused B&B, one lane closures, more crossing points, protests, escorted access for residents, escorted access for careers and deliveries, other cyclists riding clockwise, this event is going to take two days to complete. Thanks CSM.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
Not for CSM. They have sold cyclists a lie, they are calling it an intent. Now, it turns out, that any resident who cannot access their property will be allowed to with an escort. The closed road will be busier than it would have been if left open. God help us all.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
Some have paid significantly more than that. The event company have taken close to 2 million for the day with T&Cs that state that they reserve the right to change the date and place; no refunds. Stop Velo South say yes to cycling, no to road closures of 8 to 9 hours. Our ‘local rag’ is allowing local people to know about the event and what they can and cannot do which is more then the events company has done. This event is going to be dangerous in communities that struggle, on an ordinary day, to get an ambulance. Promises have been made so that profit can be made and nothing else. The day will be what it becomes but it won’t be what has been promised and CSM don’t care.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
It’s a mess. WSCC have stated in meetings that pedestrian and cycle access is permitted throughout the road closures. I think we are going to see hundreds of walkers using the roads as well as other cyclists; not to mention the protests that are planned. A mess but mor than that, dangerous. How di I let Velo South cyclists know.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
How do I let the riders of Velo South that the ride is not road closed but road shared? No motor vehicles allowed but cyclists and pedestrians will be allowed on the route. Safety of all is my concern and everyone going both ways is dangerous.

Portsmouth was once sea bed. I’m out because this argument is ridiculous.

I will share your opinion with the farmers who will not be able to access their stock and the dairy farmer who will not be able to have a milk collection that day. It will be news to them that they are the wealthy.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
For some residents, there are no alternative routes due to the nature of the rural location. Most residents still don’t know about the road closures. Vélo South is a race with a winner, timed and prizes, not a sportive. CSM are taking over a million in entrance fees and they are a private enterprise. Nothing like a football match, Pompey does not shut people in or out there homes for over 8 hours. There is action being taken and this event is still not confirmed. CSM will not return monies as their T&C state that they reserve the right to change the date and the route. This is really damaging for cycling as a whole.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
Entering the London marathon costs £39 and anyone can apply to enter. Please don’t make this comparison. Professionals, amateurs, disabled, and generally unfit can gain a place on city streets which are easily navigated around, brings millions of pounds for charities and organisers use costs for admin. Vélo South will take over a 1.1 million and donate nothing. Those residents who know about the road closures are angry but this will be nothing compared to how those who haven’t been told. I am an embrace everyone but the attitude has definitely changed toward cyclists this weekend (out on my bike). I am not surprised. Vélo South May still not take place as it has not been given the final go ahead. Huge protests against.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
To Ianrobo, the riders have made a choice to participate paid to take part and there are only 15000 of them. The residents have not had a choice and there are over 250000 of them.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
Why can’t the sportive be an A to B event. It is the circular nature of the road closures seems to be biggest reason for such long road closures and that so many people find themselves within the event. I have asked and been told that it would be inconvient for the riders.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
I have contacted them, received an email. Have attended a road show but just got stock answers. ‘We are in discussions with land owners.’ ‘The marshals will organise crossing nags for pedestrians.’

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
Come and knock on the doors of those living in Nyewood, Habin, South Harting or Compton. Ask the residents. You I’ll be surprised or they will be. Still no notice to most in the area.

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
Those who live on the route can’t go onto the road to cycle and those who wish to cycle across the route cannot access the inside island. Motor cyclist won’t be able to access many of the routes.
I do wonder how the cyclists’ supporters will get to the route. Internal roads are likely to be gridlocked due to residents having to park on these.
Closed roads for sportives great idea if everyone could join in and the residents consulted or at the very least informed. Road closures for sportives bad idea if they are for profit and excluded all but those who can pay.
