Seems mad to me.

Mick F, Well it was the Route in the Guide Book so I just followed it (no local knowledge of routes in your neck of the woods). It was dam hard. I am thinking you know an easier route ? That does not surprise me if the case. The Route creator must have been a sadist lol. Cheers. Pete

scarletnut wrote:Loved this. I did Cicerone in September 2018 and lost all photos/records in a ditch about 10 miles from Bettyhill...long story! So really nice to see a record of it. I was 65 and found it hard at times and then realised Cicerone book was taking me to Youth Hostel territory a lot of the time and that comes with hills. Being Welsh I am used to hills but found the Runcorn to Keswick section hard and dispiriting. Despite thatI aim to do LEJoG again when I am 70 but will definitely not do the Cicerone...I also rode with a head cold on Day 4 and 5 so wasn't back to full strength when the Forest of Bowland loomed.

Sorry only just seen your message. Yes Cicerone was very tough for me in parts and I agree that day 2 was extra tough. My toughest day was Glencoe to Inverness. I had some very anxious moments with traffic and remember saying at the time “will I come out of this alive ?’lol. I certainly would not do Cicerone again I would favour the Sustrans 3 week Route next time but not sure there will be a next time now. Glad my video helped you recapture some of the places you passed, sorry you lost all your stuff, devastating. Good luck for when you do it next time, any idea what route you will take ? Pete

Re: Novice needing advice, please!

Hi,

Before I set off for my 14 day Le Jog I did a quick video of the gear I was taking with me, it maybe of help to you. My trip was unsupported and I stayed in pre-booked inns, b and b’s and hotels. Having completed the challenge, I think I took just the right amount of gear and even managed to pack it into one Pannier ! All the best on your trip !! https://youtu.be/QwwJjXjxpVQ

Some really nice footage with your comments.
My attempt failed because of kidney stones near Fort William.
Well worth the watch
Thanks

Thank you. Hope you recovered in the fullness of time and did you have another shot at Le Jog Dennis ?

I recovered from the stones but I suffer from pain in my sit bones when I ride anything over thirty miles, so the ride was painful every day. Never cured it despite many bits of helpful advice on here which I have tried. I just love riding but put up with the pain.
I would like to try it again but not really viable.
Take care

Oh very sorry to hear that. At least you gave the challenge your very best shot. I now do less than 30 mile rides as the old legs are giving me problems these days. Nevertheless being on two wheels for just 5 miles is great medicine for the body and soul. Wishing you happy cycling !!

Cicerone Route - my updated Video

Hi,

Some of you may have seen the video of my trip before but I have now updated it with some new footage. It's my account as 63 year old of the struggle to complete my Le Jog in 14 days in July 2018. Hope it's of interest to potential Newbie Joggers and brings back memories for those that have already done it. https://youtu.be/WnRxMo7g2e8

Thanks, that’s a possibility I guess. Excuse my ignorance but what is a “SUD” ?

Re: Mysterious falling off bike

Ah ha! Here is another possible factor in the crash. Were you striving so hard for the strava that you took a speed-risk of some kind that lack of strava-pressure might have seen you be more circumspect? I have seen this syndrome too many times in certain lads. There was even one who killed himself descending The Trough of Bowland far too fast in an effort to get the Kom thereupon!

Of course, this is an extreme and outside chance, but ....?

Cugel

You are quite right Kugel. In fact I have already made the decision to take out the competitive bit from Strava in future. I am a fit 64 yo but there comes a time to slow down and take in the scenery. I don’t want to go head first over top of bike at 20 mph again, not fun. I probably got off quite lightly this time, fractured thumb, numerous cuts and bruises , however when I turned in bed this morning,I got a loud crack from my ribs with some pain so it’s back to hospital to get that checked out.

Re: Mysterious falling off bike

Thanks everyone for your theories. I do have disc brakes so will check discs for any evidence of stone jamming. I will revisit accident spot when my wounds have recovered and study a bit more, there was quite of bit of blood there to mark spot ouch... on a lighter note during all the haze after the accident I later realised that I left my Strava app running. To my horror (I think that’s the right word) my ride was accredited with all sorts of world time records, with a top speed of 51 mph. This was explained by the fact that after I was treated by paramedics a very kind gentleman gave me and my bike (which barely had a scratch incidentally) a lift home in his BMW people carrier with Strava clocking up crazy stuff !! Needless to say I deleted the ride on Strava now as I do have a conscious lol....

Re: Cicerone Route: A few questions

I did cicerone last july, my pitstop at bettyhill was abt 5o metres past the hotel, on the left, where there is village post office that sold hot snacks and I think had a hot drinks machine\, certainly had ample snacks anyway.

Mysterious falling off bike

The other day I was road testing my new Gravel Bike on reasonable tarmacked country road , dry conditions (30 mm tyres), in good light conditions and was abruptly unsaddled after I hit what I thought must have been a pothole or similar. I was doing 20mph at time, so I was fairly bruised and cut as I went face first onto tarmac, fractured my hand too. its the first major accident I have had in 40 years of cycling so it has unnerved me, especially as when I checked the accident spot after and there were no potholes. my only theory is that must have hit a largish pebble that took my front wheel although there were none in sight. I only weight abt ten stone and my tyre pressures were rock hard. Hhas anyone else out there had such a misfortune ? Any theories on how it might have happened. Just wondering whether my tyre pressures are too hard. Cheers

videoman wrote:Great achievement and brilliant video of your trip which has saved me from having to watch/suffer Strictly Come Dancing. Would really like to to do the route before I get much older and just wondered if you pre booked your accommodation or found it on the day?

Cheers

Well Alan I decided to pre-book all my accommodation, leaving nothing to chance. I stayed in Hotels, Inns and B and B's. I used Booking.com but Airbnb is also a good source I understand. I went in the height of the summer so prices were understandably at their peek but this time of the year offered me maximum daylight hours to complete journeys. I did'nt book stays until abt 6 weeks before but very advisable to book as much in advance as poss, especially for high season in Touristy areas.. In fact I did have probs getting a couple of stays in touristy areas, so either had to pay extra or find accom a little off track adding more mileage. If you have any more questions about Le Jog pls do not hesitate to ask and I will do my best to answer them. Thanks for enduring my video lol
