Nuts and bolts
After some grub screws for a brake adjuster I came across this site, which has a good range of products and prices are good too Westfield Fasteners

Re: Its that time of year again....
Plus 1 for the Chilterns, there are challenging rides of differing lengths that you can link up (at least, challenging enough for me!). To find something new, I got out the local OS 1:25000 and used a highlighter to mark out all the bridleways. Most could be linked up with short, easy road sections....

Re: Wheel Building. Measuring Effective Rim Dia
If you know your hub dimensions, the Mavic site can prove useful as a cross check here and there's a useful site here for cross checking too - but you are relying heavily on what others have loaded to the site. I have reliably built a few wheels with the aid of Roger Musson's book and it is very good.

Re: Experience with EU builders and Rohloff?
I have a Fahrrad Manufactur 900 which uses the sliding rear dropout method - very happy with it. I have an eccentric BB on a tandem and prefer the sliding dropout method. It was on this FM 900 that I discovered that not all external bottom brackets are the same - there are different models for singl...

Andrew's last comment is a good one - it reminded me that I did that once on a binder bolt that was part of the lug. It worked a treat on a post that did what your 27.0 is doing.

Re: Seat post woes 27.2 too big - 27.0 too small!
I've found there's 27.2 and 27.2! I bought a lovely red anodized 27.2 seatpost that was very snug and would only go in with the zig-zag treatment thirdcrank mentions. Happy to do that on a less precious post but not on this one. I then bought a Shimano post on here that went in like a dream. Maybe t...

Re: Tight fitting tyres
The tip about the rim tape is worth knowing.
Yes, the Crank one is identical in operation and good for out on the road, but the Park one is very robust and because the lever extends beyond the tyre you get a lot more purchase. It works as well on my Brompton wheels as on the 700c size.

Tight fitting tyres
I was struggling with some tight road tyres recently and nearly gave up. I used to use a VAR tyre fitting tool, but even that wouldn't help. In desperation I found the Park TL-10 (can't find an image on their site) and bought it. It works a treat, the tyres went on first time and I am now just left ...

I've got an old Record 111mm with F3881 on it and a not so old Record 111mm that has XV 235 in the same place. I also have a Veloce 111mm with black axle and no markings!

Re: Are elbow and knee/shin pads worth it?
I can confirm they work - I rode the cross country course at our local bike park, Aston Hill without armour. The last 10 yards of the descent is treacherous and I went right over the top and ripped up my left forearm. I bought some armour and went back a few weeks later and didn't come off at all! T...

Thanks for your replies guys. They are of help but I'm not quite there yet. I have sent an email to SRAM and will see what that yields!

SRAM 5 speed hub gear
Does anyone know where I can get a manual for an old SRAM 5 speed hub gear? The peculiarity about this model is that it has two toggle chains, one on either side of the hub. Thanks

What a terrific thread!
Mine comes from the Phat cycle I haul out on sunny days for a bit of cruisin, just like the one in my avatar. It's wholly impratical but a real hoot to ride.

Re: Vibrating disc brakes
I had a similar problem on the rear disc brake of my full suspension bike. It turned out that the swingarm was not quite up to the job of disc brakes, but I found a tip that worked and it has proved reliable over several years. The solution that worked for my problem involved fixing a stiff stainles...

Re: advice on adding pics to ads please
I found a way round, a bit cumbersome but it works for me! 1. right click on the picture you want to post 2. select send by email - a dialogue box pops up asking if you want to reduce its size - say yes 3. an email pops up with the reduced picture as an attachment 4. save the attachment somewhere co...
