Shimano 5800/7000 compatible?
Hi
I'm looking to replace my RD5800 short cage with a medium but can only seem to find it in the newer 7000 version. Would this be compatible with my existing 5800 shifters - eg, would the indexing be fine?
Thanks in advance
Glyn

Re: Brake lever reach adjustment
Hmm, I might just wait until my next bar tape change and investigate the inner working of the shifter in a bit more detail.
Thanks again,
Glyn

I'm a postie and deliver the mag to several addresses. I haven't delivered (or received) the Oct/Nov issue as yet.

I have the same problem with one of mine. I think the screw goes into plastic (or something else weak) and it gets stripped fairly easily. Mine were fine till I had a minor crash.
I suspected something like that, though they haven’t had a hit or anything.

Brake lever reach adjustment
I've tried to reduce the reach on my Shimano 105 rear brake/gear lever using the 2mm hex bolt under the hood. This seems simple enough, but after using the lever a couple of times the screw has completely backed-off and the lever is back to maximum reach! Could this be a problem with the thread on the screw or where it screws into maybe? It's not due to overuse as I've never previously adjusted it. I've adjusted the front (right) lever no problem and it works fine.
Any help or advise would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Glyn

A warming muscle rub, about £1 for a tube from Home Bargains, etc on legs (don't confuse with Chamois Cream)!

Few want to keep same bike(s) for years. My one carbon is a delight. Wish I could afford for the other 4 bikes to be in same material (and for carbon touring frames to be more readily available at any price!).
3-5 years life for a frame! sod that. I've got still working components way older than that.
Why on earth would anyone want a carbon touring bike?
I've got underwear older than that!

Yes, I studied the pictures in the links but was still unsure.
30T would be my maximum anyway, so things should be fine, thanks again.
I think this picture pretty much confirms that I have the ss RD...

Re: Cassette replacement
I am so grateful for the really helpful and informative replies - thank you very much!
I'm now just to decide between 28T or 30T and wonder whether there'd be a noticable difference in shifting due to the slightly bigger jump with the 30T.
I'm not even entirely sure if my RD is short or medium cage (though this may not be an issue), all that's stamped on it is: RD5800 with no reference to ss or gs. I've attached a couple of (poor) photos, maybe someone could identify the size?
I promise not to pester any more for a few days, at least.
Thanks again

It all depends on what rear mech you have, if it's std length or long, and also how fit you are.
I assume I have a standard rear mech, this would be ok with 30T?
Thanks all for some great info, I've learned a lot in 20 mins
