Re: Poor tyre manufacturing?
Could be tubes in tubeless tyres as others suggest. I was using Rene Herse with tubes and getting flats every 200 miles. I sprang for tubeless rims and ran the same tyres tubeless for 4,000 miles without a flat.

Re: 'Whitewall' Tyres
Here's what Sheldon has to say on the matter.
Many bicycle tires are "gumwalls" or "skinwalls." Gumwall tires have tan sidewalls, with no carbon black. This may make the sidewalls slightly more flexible, reducing rolling resistance. It is not clear to what extent this makes a difference.
Skinwalls have either no rubber on the sidewalls, or a very thin layer. This, too is an attempt to make the sidewall more flexible and reduce rolling resistance.
He doesn't make any reference to whitewalls. My guess is that it was a 1950s aesthetic, like whitewall tires on cars, popular mainly in the US

Re: Advice on gearing
If you do have the bike shop modify your gearing make sure you see it working with big-big gears. The second time I came across a too short chain calamity it was an LBS what done it. The first time was my blunder.

Too true. Any news on how he's doing?Carlton green wrote: ↑2 Oct 2022, 2:31pm
Brucey - greatly missed here - used to train on three speed SA hub gears. Train on one of them and everything else will seem easy.

Re: Advice on gearing
Take care shortening your chain. Check that it will still work in the big-big gears. OK you don't intend to use this combination but if your chain is too short and you shift into big-big by accident, say, the mech can jam solid and be very hard to free up. Been there, done that and the only way to get the chain free is by removing a derailer pulley.Guaranteed to ruin your climb if not your whole day.gregoryoftours wrote: ↑2 Oct 2022, 11:48am You may have to shorten your chain a bit, and your rear derailleur will have to take a little more slack which should be accommodated for if it's not too old a model of deore mech.

I did something like that a few years ago and ended up going through Billingham, not recommended.

Re: Thermometer for handlebars
Planet Bike computers have a temp display - no idea how accurate it is. It displays deg F only, if you are recording miles and deg C if it's set up for kilometers. Some people (i.e. me) may not like that. They also have a time of day clock which is handy.

Re: Best long distance saddle
This brings up a pet peeve. What never seems to be discussed is laundry and hygiene generally while on tours. Lycra shorts are not too bad; you can wash them with any old soap and usually they dry overnight. (In hot weather it doesn't hurt to start the day in damp shorts)

Are you sure about that Brucey.?From my O level chemistry Graham's Law of Effusion says the rate of effusion is inversely proportional to the square root of the molecular weight. CO2 has a higher MW than Nitrogen (air's main component) so I would have thought it was a better gas than air.

Re: LHR to Avenue Verte help please.
Thank you all very much for your replies. I'll be bringing my bike in a cardboard box, the type manufacturers use for shipping. I'm old and I find jet lag really hard on me so the option of staying at a Heathrow hotel for the first night looks very attractive.
The Heathrow bike hub sounds intriguing. Any links?

I've had a stainless Bivo bottle for about a year and like it. Don't know if they are available in the UK. My only grouse is that you have to tighten the top quite gently otherwise it can get very hard to undo,

LHR to Avenue Verte help please.
At the end of May/early June I'm hoping to fly into Heathrow and ride the Sustrans Avenue Verte route to Paris. So, how to I get from LHR to the Route? Does anyone have a recommendation for accommodation near LHR where I can stay a couple of nights to recover from jet lag? I plan on credit card touring as much as possible.
