Re: Cycle Surrey Hills routes

For information, we’ve had some reports of some vandalism on the route signage- there were a couple of instances last year, and then some it would appear more recent ones. We know that at least two post have been knocked down/removed (one twice now) and hat several others have had the A4 signs peele...

Re: North Downs Way

Really the bigger question is to begin to analyse why, despite this data, we still only have two of our fifteen flagship National Trails, whose very purpose is to encourage people out into the countryside, fully open to riders Sorry if I missed it, but which is the other one fully open, alongside P...

Re: Off road history.

This was the very reason that the CTC pressed for bridleway access in the late 60s. There was no idea at the time that a future generation would use these routes for anything other than joining places up. Actually, that’s not true. The achievements secured by the CTC in the 1968 parliamentary debat...

Re: North Downs Way

You don't need flagship trails to encourage people into the countryside. That’s not what the data suggests There are plenty of roads around and many people including me cycle them. Maybe they’re not trying to cater for people like you? After all it's not the countryside people want but more of a pl...

Re: North Downs Way

[edit] Just noticed there's a good report about the route and its future development here: https://www.cyclingweekly.com/routes/south/search-gravel-bike-adventures-englands-green-pleasant-land-396116 There's also the Cycling UK article (linked from the Cycling Weekly one) with GPX files. Do note th...

Re: North Downs Way

Oh, it’s me again for this one I’m afraid Linus The GPX route will be updated again within the next couple of days, part of that being that this was the route used for a press run, with a couple of diversions for things that we did on the way (essentially tied in with the North Downs Way anniversary...

Re: Places to cycle in the North East?

Ok, so if you’re in that area then the obvious ones are the rail lines like derwent walk and Chester-le-street to Consett Chopwell Woods always good for some forest track riding More mountain biking than you can shake a stick at around Blanchland If you want a real treat - head for a drive over to H...

Re: A List of former YHA hostels

Affordable & reliable accommodation in rural areas is, of course, a complex issue - but one that I think is particuarly important for cyclists. I think the above comment about the marketing people trying to compete with travelodges is broadly right - certianly in the mid 2000’s there was a feeli...

Re: Cycle Surrey Hills routes

Mud, nettles, and stretches where you have to walk are part of natural trails. I'm exploring this area with a view to leading group rides aimed at leisurely off-road touring (rather than run-o-the-mill MTB-ers) so I need to risk assess the routes before leading them and find some suitable lunch sto...

Re: Cycle Surrey Hills routes

Glad you enjoyed it :D The other routes are broadly similar - the Puttenham Loop had had some minor pronblems so full waymarking has been a bit delayed as we change a couple of things and resurface a short stretch, also some minor changes to one stretch near Frensham little pond to be done over the ...
