Re: Oldest bike
1964 Moulton f-frame, restored as a Speedsix - ish with a 9 speed cassette instead of the original 4 speed Sturmey Archer hub. Comfortable, reasonably light thanks to modern alloy components and used regularly for day rides.

Re: The war on motorists.
Good points - democracy won't work if the government and their allies in the media use lies and disinformation to mislead the voters. It turned out quite badly for the Weimar Republic, and they didn't have the advantage of social media and the Interweb.

Re: Tyre advice needed
I replaced the wheels and tyres on a Kingcycle, no effect on the steering and stability. 16" / 349mm front, 24" / 507mm rear so better availability of tyres and tubes for the future. Only other modification was long reach cable operated brakes instead of the madura hydraulics.

Although the modern equivalent is a stink river, whereby you maximise profits by dumping s**t in the nearest watercourse.

Re: Recumbent safety
A few questions in relation to this:
- if it's a narrow country lane the drivers will be driving slowly and with care?
- if it's a narrow country lane there won't be any 40 tonne trucks?
- if it is being used as a rat run have you considered reporting this to the highways authority with a view to making an 'access only' restriction?
- if a driver can see the edge of the road and any junction markings (which obviously are at zero ground level) why would it be difficult to see something at car (recumbent) height?
- do you ride a bicycle of any sort?

Re: Tony Doyle has passed RIP
I remember watching a 'Devil take the hindmost' race on tv, on a running track rather than a velodrome. This was in the days when bicycle racing on mainstream TV was rare so probably 1980's or 90's. And of course Tony won it.

Re: Recumbent as a route back into cycling
Another option would be a folding recumbent - Azub Origami or HP Velotechnic Grasshopper. Quite pricey new, they do occasionally come up second hand. That's how I acquired an Origami, it's a lovely bike and folds up to fit in our car (a Kia Picanto, quite a small hatchback).

Re: 'Wild' Camping Netherlands & Germany
There are small, natural campsites so although not wild camping may be a similar experience and avoids the big commercial sites. Some require booking, others don't and prioritise people who arrive on foot or by bike. Details here:

Cycle touring campsites in the Netherlands
I'm planning a cycle camping tour in June, starting / finishing at Ijmuiden (using the ferry from North Shields). Approximately 50 miles a day with plenty of time for cafes and sightseeing. Thoughts so far:
- the mini campings and SVR sites seem the most suitable for a solo cyclist
- as it is before the main holiday season, maybe not book sites so that I can be more flexible
- planning to head towards the areas around Arnhem / Appeldoorn as I haven't visited those parts before
Any thoughts or suggestions on this, and possible places to visit, are welcome.

Re: Bella Build
Might be worth looking at the cable stay clips for Sturmey Archer hub gears, available in a variety of diameters and can be adapted to work as reaction clips.
