Which, of course, is almost always an insurmountable obstacle to trying to second-guess a verdict or sentence.

Unless you have sat in the public gallery throughout a trial, you are never going to be able to put yourself in the place of a jury member.

A warning that an attack is likely in the next two days doesn't preclude the possibility of one happening a couple of weeks later.

Precedent has no relevance in this instance.
Because....? Its no use saying that Precedent has no relevance in this instance, because that's like saying that this event will never happen again. I hope it won't but the future doesn't make any promises for this...
Sorry, I had assumed that you were using the term in the legal sense.

In the Crown Court, only previous judgments in the higher courts (e.g. the Appeal Court) can constitute Precedent. Obviously that doesn't apply in this instance.

So much of what is written within this topic expresses feelings that Putin deserves a bloody nose, a natural, immediate response to his illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Written where? In this forum?

I don't see much of that. I do see a lot of posters expressing a wish for the military invasion of Ukraine by Russia to be halted and reversed. That's quite different.

Two sides of the same coin, I'd have said.

There are of course several "end of conflict" scenarios. One of which would be the Russians simply going home.

Wrong on two counts. It should be Pedant's Society not Pedants Society.
Er...in which case should that not be Pedants' Society... ? as the position of the apostrophe in the quote above infere that there was only one and that therefore not a Society?
Exactly. Just like the greengrocer's apostrophe is only used by one offender. Oh, hang on ...

So you go to 4 or 5 and use the train?
You might, I don't.

Very interesting, thanks for posting.

The effect on convicted individuals is obvious. But this could also have major influence on blanket exoneration, by primary legislation for any other approach.

Jonathan

PS: The current time to process what I think must have been an unopposed appeal:

It could be argued that after so many innocent people were convicted, so what if the guilty are exonerated.

Carlton green wrote: 1 Jan 2024, 10:54amMy perspective is broader than the moment of impact and I look at a wider picture. The killed included: the president of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, and his wife, Maria; the former president of Poland in exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski; the chief of the Polish General Staff and other senior Polish military officers; the president of the National Bank of Poland; Polish government officials; 18 members of the Polish parliament; senior members of the Polish clergy. In terms of derailing a country bent on distancing itself from Russia the crash must surely have been a significant aid to Russia. Of course coincides do happen but they’re rare, in this case I believe the adverse event was engineered to happen though there might have been some opportunism too.
Had it been a conspiracy then yes, it would have made sense to select a flight that had a number of senior Polish military and political figures on board.

But concluding that the passenger list meant that it must therefore have been a conspiracy is pretty shaky logic.

Feel free to believe what you like, but that doesn't alter the fact that the investigation determined the cause of the crash was descending below the MDA in poor visibility and consequently impacting the ground.
