Cyclists love shaving weight but most of my weight is around my belly so until thats gone I don't get to hung up about it. I just see it as more exercise! You don't want punctures....we use Shwalbe marathon plus , prob for six years now and never had a puncture since! But they are not the perfect t...

Re: Bordeaux to Chamonix...thoughts

Don't know if you guys want an update, but I'll give you one. When I came up with my fantastic idea, I hadn't ridden in ages and had 209 days until we go, we now have 80 days, and wow time has flown. Bought a couple of hybrids Our first over night planned trip was erm, interesting, we had a planned ...

Re: The Downs Link

Hi. Grew up with the downslink next door and still live within ¼ mile of it... A lot of it has been resurfaced in the last 18 months, easy 2 day ride, not a hard one day ride. Are you planning north to South or south to north? Wild camping is possible, if you think Copsale would be a half way point ...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

[i] Wow, that puts me in the shade. I've really pushed myself, 25 miles this morning and will do 20 this evening, I've bought everything 2nd hand, think I said I started off less than half of that with jelly legs.... As I said there is always something to look at on the way round, the sun is certai...

One more thing, padded shorts, I'm not brave enough to just go for lyraca look just yet so wear them under something else and buy the most expensive pair you can, I've gone for the btwin ones that are gell, (around £35) and they are far superior that their £20 ones

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

1st of all, well done and 2nd of all good luck. Think there are a few threads on here that echo similar, mine being one. I'm older than you, but that is the only difference, I was alm ost 20st at my heaviest. Pleased to hear that you have a bike sorted, I started on my 18+ year old mountain bike aro...

Re: Help! Getting back from Basel

How do they treat the bikes Simon? Have to confess the thought of putting my bike in the hands of airport luggage handlers males me very very nervous! Please don't put the fear of God into me... We fly Stanstead to Nice with with jet2 and our 2 bikes mid September. Good luck with getting your bike ...

Re: Am I mad, newbie tourer

I appreciate the comments and "quotes" shooting a certain other poster down, I just ignore the haters  In regards to gps, I found my phone was OK on 30-40 mile rides (3-4 hours) then the battery was getting low and I wouldn't have enough faith in it for my planned trip. Looked into dy...

Re: Am I mad, newbie tourer

There are two kinds of soreness - the one that disappears after ? a week or two ? as your muscles and bum harden up, and the kind that never goes and only gets worse because the saddle doesn't suit your anatomy. I was criticised in an earlier post for being unduly negative. All I meant though (and ...

Re: Am I mad, newbie tourer

I'm a tough skinned ********.... That won't prevent discomfort in the backside for anybody who prefers planning to getting some miles in. True that, I've been called a pain in the buttock before, maybe it'll be payback time  Everyone is different, but from your personal experience, how long (...

If ok, I'll keep you all updated on progress equipment etc. After a summer break, dug bike out (which is a hard tail specialized mtb ca year 2000 and will be changed) only 20 and 30 mile days training over this week out on the road, before I had to leave for work (I work abroad) and at the moment wo...

Re: Am I mad, newbie tourer

I'm a tough skinned *******, haven't taken anything personally, the topic heading opened me up for some hard hitters and have had some good pointers to take away and work with, I work in the equine industry (you gotta be tough skinned) and realise everyone's experience and views are different (you c...
