Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

Okay, I'm back! So I ended up at the bike recycling place on Saturday and came away with a decathlon Rockrider 520 for only £140! Its not _precisely_ the type/style bike i was recommended to get, however they did do their best to lock the front suspension and turn it into a rigid frame as best they ...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

Update: Turn's out a small-medium frame fits me. Had a ride on a few bikes at the bike recycling place, but the only one which seemed to be a good fit for my requirements was around £140, and was made out of 3 different rigid frames. Front mech disc & rear V, however it was comfortable to ride, ...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

The only issue with buying from the bike hub scheme I have is that I have no way of researching what exactly I am getting, their site does not list any bikes from what I can see: https://www.lifecycleuk.org.uk/buy-a-bike https://www.lifecycleuk.org.uk/bike-recycling I will be heading down tomorrow m...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

About the shoes: I only want this to prevent an future issues with plantar fasciitis which may lead to a 2 week recovery period in order for my tendons to heal up to the point I may cycle again. So far I'm 5 days into recovery from this issue and still get extremely sharp/jarring pains at certain a...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

£475 is significantly out of my price range considering the alternatives, and similarly I was rather hoping to avoid pre-owned if at all possible, I just don't feel comfortable in my ability to look over a bike and call it fit for purpose. All things considered, the subway 1 is looking to be my prim...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

Okay. No disc breaks, no freewheel. It did take some persuasion but I trust that you all have my best interest at heart, as you have all put so much time into detailing the why's and how's. However: This still leaves me with very limited options to choose from especially from decathlon, who do not s...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

Hmm, I have further looked into rigid options, but am again stuck for choice when considering mechanical/hydraulic disc breaks. It seems that rigid MTB's are rather limited in number, and hybrids even more so, although I've only been using Halfords & Decathlon for my searches. Are there any othe...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

So, from what I can tell, If I want a rigid bike then I'm out of luck with Decathlon unless I drop the disc breaks too. Can't say I'm too fond of this option, but the Carrera Subway 1 or 2 supposedly meets these criteria, however there does seem to be somewhat negative feedback from this community. ...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

I also suggested a bike hub or similar. Though I don't know the Bristol area to make specific recommendations. I doubt that the OP is ignoring the advice, however. They've got lots of information to process. ^ I did look and saw friday/saturday sales/auctions every weekend. I will be paying a visit...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

Wow, some very thoughtful points here. As for my motivation, I NEED to lose weight and NEED to get active to improve my physical well being as well as my mental well being. With running out of the question for now, and swimming having me hate myself at the thought of it, I see cycling as one of the ...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

Pneumatic suspension seems beyond my price point, but some ability to absorb shock is better than none, although not strictly necessary I suppose. That rigid bike sold for an incredibly low price, which surely is appealing in itself, however due to how ebay typically works I would be hesitant to pay...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

there are two main reasons for suggesting an older MTB 1) it will be cheaper to buy and 2) it will (all things being equal) be quite a lot stronger if it is fitted with 26" (559) wheels rather than 700C (622) wheels. (Thorn use 26" wheels for their 'expedition tourers' for this reason) Wi...

Surprised no one has asked about budget. paddywan wrote: I've quit smoking, So basically he can walk into Evans and name his price, so to speak. "Smoking is expensive and you might be surprised at how it all adds up. On average, most people who quit save around £250 each month. That's nearly £...

20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

Hi guys, After visiting my GP's over the passed few weeks I've quit smoking, been eating healthily, and on Monday began walking in order to start burning calories, however after walking just 3 miles in an hour, 10 minutes into my walk i felt pain in my right ankle, which continued for the remainder ...
