Re: Pedals and big feet in trainers

I found in my box of bits a pair of Mongoose Mountain Bike Pedals
https://www.amazon.com/Mongoose-Mountai ... B071FG54V6
You note that they come with reflectors, this allows me to fit half toe clips. I tried fitting the large version me feet now did suffer cramp but there was a large amount of empty space in front of my foot and they touch the front mudguard. I then tried medium size clips but now I found that my high profile trainers did not fit in the gap offered by the clips and caused my foot to be push back and gave me cramp again.

Can anybody half toe clips that are suitable for high profile trainers.

Washer different types

Washer different types

I have a mind to reassemble and recondition a number of brakes and other cycle parts.

To this end I need some washer

Weinmann brakes: I notice that many sides pull brake have a penny washer located between the 2 arms of the brake caliper.

This washer is very thin and is made of brass/copper.

Whilst located in front of the brake arm is a very thin aluminium washer

I know you should be able obtain washer, but I need to know the following

Question
Brass or copper and thickness?
Aluminium washer what thickness

Quill stems

The expander bolt normally has thin washer again is that bras or copper and what sizes do I need?
The clamp bolt what size and thickness do I need?

For those of us somewhat more puny than you, 70 miles is an impossible dream. 30-40 is a big day out. It takes all sorts.

As long as you have no existing medical conditions and your bicycle fit you and is adjusted correctly anybody between the age of say 20 and 60 is capable-of riding 100 miles in low land UK if they build up to it.

I have no view on this discussion since I am a recent member.

That's right. The Charity Commission can remove charitable status, but "the government" can't.

Ultimately, of course, the Charity Commission acts to enforce charity law and the government could change the law. But the new law would then apply to everyone equally: the government can't pick on an individual charity and remove its status.

Likewise the government can't take away a specific charity's tax exemptions just because it doesn't like what the charity says.
But they could fail to give grants or contracts for work.

I realise it's a contentious issue for some, but I can't see what it's achieved anymore than when it was member owned and run,for all the over inflated salaries being paid to it's top executives toeing a government line with a threat of losing their salaries if they don't!
There's also been much money spent on rebranding and repackaging.
It used to be a CYCLE TOURING CLUB it's not that anymore and is the worse for it IMHO.
YVMV mine won't,it lost my membership when it was hijacked and became what it never was before.

You mean "Cyclists' Touring Club"

What happens? You get professional leadership in place? Why is that a bad thing?

What was so bad before when the club(now a "charity")was run and owned by it's members?
How much better is it now than then?
How much more has the "charity" achieved since it's "charitable" status?
It now receives money and tax relief from the very structure it campaigned against with the threat of withdrawal of those benefits and "charitable" status if it makes too many of the wrong noises.
No I'm sorry but the CTC,CUK as it now terms itself,is a "charity" in name only,it was hijacked some time ago and now like so many other so called "charities" has become a business with it's donorship seeing little "charity" or any more benefit as a result.

Members of the CTC voted to be charity moving away from a member-focused member lead organization to one focusing on promoting cycling generally and being led by selected talented people who aim to create a thrusting go ahead and forward-looking organization.

Re: Pedal removal - spanner direction ( which side non-std ? )

Removal pedal on a standard cycle.

Place spanner on flats or Allen key in recess
While looking at the cycle side on
If possible, with the spanner /Allen key pointing rearwards at 2 o’clock position
Push the spanner downwards.

NB

I had a Brompton folding pedal done uo in a bike shop with a long Torque Wrench.

https://turbobobbicycleblog.wordpress.c ... and-money/
When I took the crank off to which it was attached I tried to remove the pedal with a smaller of the two Allen key recess, with Allen key socket I sheared the tool.

I suspect there may be corrosion
So I place the component in place in a container and spayed with T2 lubricant
Half many weeks tied again with no success
Then I tried using a larger socket Allen key with a long tough wench with extension
Loud crack
I release
I inspected all the threads and saw no damage
I cleaned all parts and place in my part box

Error
I should have removed the pedal whilst still on the bike. This would permit more leverage.

What effects upon society caused by (COVID-19)?

Coronavirus (COVID-19) and long terms effects upon society?

COVID-19 as had and may continue to have a very disrupted effect in the UK and elsewhere.
I read on this forum many have discussed the consequences of the lockdown and other requirements of this crisis.
Some have suggested there may knock effect on the UK and other place transport policy but have been limited in their suggestion.

Likewise, some commentators have alluded to the reappraisal of the worth that society attributed to low grade /low paid workers e.g. dust bin men, cleaners, delivery drivers, etc.

Also, once past the initial shock of the onset of this crisis the academic world than the media and now on this forum comments have been made on the lack of foresight and poor planning that as made is crises worse it needs to be.

What do the contributor to this forum think will be the long-term effect of this crises in the UK and in general the world and for cycling and of course Cycling UK?
