That sounds like the kind of solution I was expecting, but hoping to avoid !!!
It seems a shame when, what seems like, a nice light; with "mounting hardware is among the most comprehensive", has to be lashed on to the bike with " old bottle tops & sticky back plastic "{Blue Peter reference}.
As I was expecting to part use one of the existing mounts, on a couple of bikes, can anyone tell me if Moon's are compatible with any cheaper mounts - £5-6 + p&p for a £20 light seems a bit steep.

Re: Mounting rear Moon Nebula light?
Has anyone found a solution yet?
I too have an under saddle bag that precludes the use of the seat post or saddle rail mounts. Clipped to the bag it points downward & bounces merrily.
No mudguard.
The seat stays are too thin for the universal mount, which would in any case put the light in the rear wheel, when used horizontally.
The universal mount also only adjusts in one direction, seat stays are angled in two directions.
And despite what Moon, and others, claim; the Nebular is designed to be used in the horizontal position (the light spread is not the same when used vertically).
Any ideas out there?
