Re: Carrera Crossfire 2 - Chain slipping
If you are looking for a front shifter on ebay look for Deore or SLX, they use glass fibre reinforced plastic rather than resin which I've had crack before. Look to pay about £5+postage.

Re: Mid-range wheels - off the shelf brands or custom built?
I'm thinking of building some wheels, I have 32 hole Shimano HB-M8000 (£11 ebay) and FH-T675 (£13 ebay) already and I'm thinking of getting DT Swiss R500 (~£42 each) rims in 700c when they are back in stock then work out the spoke lengths with Shimano's hard to figure out measurements and try to find the ebay seller who sold cheap spokes from various brands (dtswiss/aci alpina/sapim/halo). My current wheels are Shimano 36 hole RM66 hubs on Alexrims DH19 rims, never gone out of true in around 5000 miles with Panaracer Gravelking SK but they are pretty heavy at 2200+g.
I've always seen Fulcrum wheelsets available cheap but read they use proprietary spokes and sometimes 4 spokes lengths on just one side of the whee and also strange spoke patterns and hubs with no spares.

Re: semi fluid grease eg carlube 100+
I bought some the the other day. I used it in some m780 shifters, no change in sound but it certainly reaches everywhere. It comes out as a heavy oil and after the bubbles disappear it settles into a fine sticky to the touch but at the same time slippery film layer. I used some in some XT jockey wheels where I'd used big standard comma lithium grease and the semi fluid grease thinned out the #2 grease so they spin more freely. In the XT jockey wheel I left one seal on and the semi fluid grease penetrated the seal on the other side. A little goes a long way.

Can anyone explain why a vaccine that needs to be stored at -70c and is apparently ruined if it isn't but if it gets injected into a 37c human being it somehow works? Anyway in case you missed my warning below here it is again because apparently 78% of you want it.

The barrel adjuster is the problem, buy a third party or older style shimano one.

The cable routing is better on the T781, the T8000 routes the cable over a knuckle leaving a little bit of slack

Re: Replacement for a Deore XT M772?
My experience of the wear in shadow derailleurs is the cable arm sinking below the H limit point and play at the pulley cage as indicated in the video below (not my videos). I bought my m772 used and it only had play at the pulley cage but it broke after overtightening the main body spring grub screw pushing the from pivot out (only the first revision had that grub screw), a SLX m662 had play and sinkage and it's just about usable , after just 400 miles my m4000 had a tiny bit of sinkage at the cable arm but shifts perfectly.

Re: Replacement for a Deore XT M772?
I use an Alivio M4000 with SLX M662 inner plate (18g lighter than the steel Alivio plate) and ultegra 6800 pulleys 246g. M772 is 227g, M662 is 262g.

Re: 'Resin pads only'
RT62 in 160mm works with wide or narrow, saw it in one of the compatibility charts 2005 I think, I bought a pair for £12NOS when my rt54 wore down to 1.5mm. I have m395 brakes with Noah and Theo sintered pads.
As you can see m525 and other b01s pads are compatible with RT62 160mm but not 180mm or 203mm because the rotor area is smaller.

M530 SPD Spring Tension Bolt broken
Since the day I got them M530 (new about 3 years ago) the left pedal tension wouldn't adjust on one side, now I know why. I took my pedals off to add some grease (clean as a whistle inside) and removed the clipping mechanisms to clean them when I discovered the broken bolt.
The original bolt seems to be unavailable to buy anywhere, its a left hand threaded m4 bolt with a smaller than usual head with a collar. I managed to coble together a makeshift replacement with a normal right hand threaded m4 bolt and a square washer and marked the dodgy side of the pedal with a reflective red sticker. I tested it with an old shoe and it did work fine but its at a minimum tension.
is there a source of this bolt I haven't found, or will this road spd spring tension bolt work? https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/pedals-clea ... y45f04000/
