Re: Something new to watch out for! - suspiciously fast (motor-)bicycles

So a forum about cycling with a section called "On the road" isn't a place to discuss e-bikes?

Noted. Thanks for the heads up on that one. I got confused by words.

Why stop there when there's children starving in Africa, the Emperor has lost his Groove and Epstein didn't kill himself?!

But we're not talking about those things, we're talking about e-bikes (and similarly related).

Is it a competition and only the most dangerous topics are worthy of discussion?
Could you please draw us up a list of valid topics you deem fit for our engagement?
Thanks.

Today on Whacky Races:

Early dusk commute home.
Guy behind me on a mb chasing, no lights.
Comes blasting past me at pace, and I look to see his monster legs and registered far too little effort there.
Then I spot the fat downpipe. Fairy nuff.
But now I'm coming up to "traffic" - a slow cyclist and what appears to be an electric scooter behind him wibbly wobbling about.
As I get close I see it's a hoverwheel.
Our lead cyclist is clearly really struggling with the hill, and the wibbly wobbly guy was in no shape to be overtaking anyone so I wait for a good gap in traffic and join and pass them both. Carry on with journey.
Get to the top of the first Hill-ette and hit a small flat section and ZOOOOM! - comes flying past me guy on his hoverball-mathingy.
And this thing was GOING!
Wibbly wobblying it's way past at car speeds.
I just let him go.
No way.
Fair play to the guy for the pair he must be carrying, but rather him than me, and rather a good safe stopping distance away thanks.

Re: How has your commute shaped your bike?

You mean there's kinds of wind other than a Headwind?
I look forward to meeting one of those one day. :D

Just gone from a pair of 30 schwalbe spicers to 32 marathons on the hybrid.
Seems some POS is going round smashing bottles deliberately on cycle lanes around Leeds, so lots of glass usually on the entrance to cycle lanes. :x
Picked up 3 punctures in 2 weeks on the old tyres.

32 and lower psi and crossed fingers I can put an end to rush-hour roadside tube changes. :(
Making sure I pull over after riding through another smashed bottle to check nothing got stuck.

Re: Workstand

Got this from Halfords and found it very useful, no problems with it and the right price for me too.

It was a replacement headset and I didn't want to shell out for a headset removal tool and headset press that would cost twice the price of tech labour.
Also I have limited storage space for tools/workshop items.

So I heard, and they were my first call when looking.
Fair enough they have an 8 week backlog, don't mind that. But no booking? And just leave it with them til they get round to it?

I'm kind of hoping that it was some temp who said that and he'd got the wrong end of the stick, cause otherwise that's a crap way of dealing with things imo.

Re: Best technician in Leeds?

Thanks guys, keep the recommendations coming, all good. :)

Yeah, the Scottish-related tech apparently has a good reputation around here, but he bodge he did on mine was not great.
Fair enough as a temporary job until he could get the correct sized parts (even though when booking it I told them what they'd need) - nothing was said.
If it was me I'd never let a customer take a job away in that state.

On top of that he removed my Dork Disk. :x

I realise some people hate them and remove them by default, but I lost a wheel to lack of DD some years back, so always keep it on.
It's not like I went round his house and removed all his pictures and posters just because I decided he doesn't need them....

"Factually Unicorns exist!"

"Factually Zoologists and Veterinarians know nothing about animals because they only study real world ones!"

"Factually Unicorns were faster with longer horns"

I get, I get it. This isn't about anti-helmet - it's an exercise in art-humour.
Nice.

Best technician in Leeds?

All opinions welcome. Who is the best tech in Leeds?

Experiences so far:

Large well-known Bike Chain - failed to spot awful brake issue despite being told it was an issue - called me after service to advise all was well and the brakes are fine- told them to take it for a ride - they then decided I was right and changed the brake pads.

Smaller chain, Scottish related - needed a replacement headset, tapered 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 - bodged a straight 1 1/8 in leaving compression ring too high and the dust cover sat 2mm above the bearings - leaving them fully exposed, also somehow managed to twist cables wrong way round putting handlebars back on.

Small indie down Kirkstall Road - tried to book service, was told 8 week backlog and I can't book, would just have to drop bike off with them and leave it there until they got round to it.

There has to be someone good around here that doesn't have banana's waiting policies. :?:

Re: How has your commute shaped your bike?

Thats actually a nice looking bike. Although those tyres would drive me insane, but that's me. :D

Kind of regret buying a nicer hybrid for my commute (rather than something cheaper), as a couple of times I've had to park it in places I knew it would be keenly eyed up by miscreants, which isn't great, one instance I walked into a shop and straight back out again due to queues and in 20 seconds it had attracted a small group looking shifty.

Also having paid more I kind of over-obsess about keeping it clean, which is going to be a pain in the Winter months.

So am seriously considering a winter beater. Don't know enough about 2nd hand though, and don't have Facebook which I understand is the market of choice for 2nd hand now, and any of the cheap off the shelf Halfords etc ones all look like they'd only last 5 minutes.

Re: Implications of a No Deal Brexit for cycling?

And don't forget the only trade partner that wants anything to do with us Post-Brexit - Trump.

And all he wants is the NHS, for which I doubt we'll get much if anything in return.

So once hospital visits are as expensive as they are over the pond that will help reduce the number of cyclists as no-one will be able to afford the £50,000.00 bill for falling off their bike.

Comparisons to Rape and Sexual Assault all because a helmet might mess up your precious hair-do?

Revolting.
