Re: Hub gear, front derailleur
Thanks all, much appreciated. I guess the main reason for keeping the triple is that it's already there! I'm pretty sure I can get a secondhand rear wheel with hub for very little, so that the experiment would be cheap. And reversible, if it didn't work out. There seems no technical reason for it no...

Hub gear, front derailleur
Hi, not posted for a while, hope you can help. I'm disenchanted with rear dérailleurs on an everyday bike, and am looking to introduce a hub gear - Shimano 7 speed most likely. The bike has vertical drop outs, and so keeping the derailleur itself as a tensioner would sort that out. But it has a trip...

Re: ...why 142 yards?
Resurrected because I was searching for an image of the 142 yard sign, which as an old Norfolkian, has always intrigued me. I was searching because of this ad, lauding the new Golf's ability to see into the future, as it were. Initially I'd thought the ad agency must be based in Norfolk, but the sma...

Re: Working as cycle tour guide
Didn't expect to see this thread resurface! For the record I did two two-week sessions for Marmot tours one summer, supporting riders on the Raid Pyrenean. It was hard work, but involved driving the support van rather than leading a group on the road. As others have said, you need good people skills...

Re: The Francigena Way :Canterbury-Rome pilgrim's path
I'm looking to do this in June - not least because it was walked by an Archbishop of Canterbury called Sig ERIC in 960 something - he listed his waypoints https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_Francigena#Sigeric.27s_itinerary on the return route and most of these translate well. Looking at taking three ...

Re: Folding bike and Ryanair
Thanks all - decided to follow Gattonero's advice, and have booked ticket plus 20 kg checked baggage - figured that if worst happened, I'd just have to pay an excess *crosses fingers*.

Folding bike and Ryanair
Planning next year's excursion, which will involve getting my Dahon PrestoLite folder back from Rome in June. Initially, wanted to train it, but then the lure of a £40 flight back to East Mids [20 miles from home] was too great... However, paying another £50 for the wee bike [16" wheels, folds ...

Helinox Chair 1 review
I've recently returned from a three week tour of Spain, which involved a mix of hotels, campsites and wildcamping. Before leaving, I bought a Helinox Chair 1 for £60 from Blacks - bright green hence £60 - the more subdued colours are £90! The best decision I ever made. It is supremely comfortable, l...

Re: Bikes on victoria - Portsmouth train
Much obliged all. I can picture the setup now, which I've used on other lines. The trailer is a Carry Freedom City, which is quite civilised, and looks more like a wheeled suitcase than a conventional bike trailer, so all should be well. Train is at around 13.00, so hopefully quiet and hassle free :...

Bikes on victoria - Portsmouth train
Am heading to Portsmouth in a week's time, taking bike and trailer on train. Am ok on the Leicester to St Pancras leg, and have checked bikes allowed unrestricted on Victoria -Portsmouth. But does anyone know details of the bike accom on the trains on that stretch? Time is a bit tight for the interc...

Re: Bicycle restrictor
Can a wheelchair/mobility scooter/hand cycle user get through it? We have had some success with barriers by using a sympathetic disabled cyclist on a recumbent trike argue that they were discriminatory and hence illegaL More chance of succeeding than by saying that they inconvenience cyclists.

Re: How the spirit of cycling has changed
I recently gave up my part time job as a chauffeur, ferrying directors and senior managers of various organisations around the country. It surprised me at first how often they would turn out to be into cycling. But all too often I felt no real connection with them as fellow cyclists. They always mad...

Re: Shimano 9/10 speed
Just to update - became slightly lost when thinking about this and so took problem to LBS. They confirmed that despite it being >10 years old, shifter was indeed 10 speed. Chain rings deemed ok, so got away with replacing chain and having new [10 speed] cassette fitted. So now have 30 gears [!] rang...
