Thank you all for the replies.
The bike in question is a Nigel Dean World Tour 531ST with 531 forks, so quite decent.
I will take time to consider the next move as it needs another repaint.
I also need to raise the handlebars to help with advancing years .
I have just raised the bars on my summer bike to see if there is an improvement in my lower back.
The owner of my LBS agreed about the alloy A9 headset and suggested using a steel alternative. He was not so keen on using thread lock though.

1" Steerer- worn threads
Good Morning all.
The threads on the1" steerer of my old touring bike have worn and the headset now will not stay correctly adjusted.
I have secured it with blue/medium thread lock, but not tested the repair by riding the bike yet.
Should the thread lock be considered a permanent repair or should I seek a better solution?
I posted some months ago about raising the handlebars and could now combine both modifications together.
Can steerer extenders/raisers be used to secure the headset and raise the bars whilst converting to an ahead-set type stem?
The headset is a Stronglight A9 with needle bearings, not sure if will make a difference.
The solution needs to be cheapish and easy as the bike is now only used during the winter for rides up to about 30 miles.
Thanks for your help.

Schmidt SON Klassix Withdrawn from sale.
Please read carefully.
Schmidt SON 28 Klassix 179 silver hub dynamo with silver Mavic MA3 36 hole rim for rim brakes.
The dynamo is due for maintenance which it will receive from Schmidt - "BEFORE IT IS SOLD"
The MA3 rim is in very good condition and the wheel is true and built with stainless steel spokes.
The wheel was built by a very good wheel builder.
A new SON hub and wheel would cost in excess of £270,
I am asking £150 or offers for what will essentially be a nearly new wheel.
The reason for the sale is lack of intended use.
Please notify me if there is any interest, it will then be sent to Schmidt.
I am only going to have the dynamo maintained if there is any interest in purchasing it,

Re: Fixing a non-working front derailleur
This thread highlights everything we have lost in recent years!!
We learnt from our Dad or our club mates, often being shown and helped to maintain our bikes in a polite way.
Social media is breeding an attitude of judgemental and unhelpful comment.
I am sure some of the comments above have sent the OP running for the hills never to return.
Another potential convert lost forever.
Perhaps the moderators should be more active and slap down some of the unhelpful comments displayed in this thread.
Just my opinion of course.

Re: Schmidts nabendynamo servicing
Morning All.
Is it still worth sending Schmidts away for servicing?
Mine is a Son 28 Klassik K-No:179. the wheel has become very tight to turn.
Any idea when they were made from and to, I think mine was new in 2006!!
After some discussion with St. John Street Cycles, I now understand that the wheel does not have to be dismantled for servicing, thus saving some cost.
Or is it just junk if it is no longer going to be used, I am not sure if it will be cost effective to sell after the service.
Any thoughts please.
Many thanks.

Re: Wheel rim wear
Many thanks for your replies.
The rims are 20 years old and have done very good service.
Having looked again there is about a 1mm gap between the straight edge and and the centre of the wear, not 2mm as previously stated.
A new rim will be fitted.
Regards Andy
Happy New Year.

Re: Wheel rim wear
Having recently experienced tyre explosions, I have checked my Mavic MA3 rims for wear as a possible cause, the other possibility is incorrectly aligned brake blocks, which I have now replaced.
The MA3 rim (which does not have a wear indicator) shows wear of about 2mm when a straight edge is placed next to it.
Knowing that some Mavic rims have very thin brake surfaces, does anyone know how much wear an MA3 will take.
I have carried out a pressure test to over 100psi with a Durano tyre and there was no explosion and no additional deflection of the worn side.
Is it time to replace the rim or am I being too cautious.
I have put on some spare wheels to keep on riding.
It is my winter bike which I will probably ride about 400-500 miles on before the spring.
Any thoughts please.

Re: 7 speed freewheel recommendation
Thanks for your replies.
I have been out to garage this morning.
As I said I have 3 free wheels, I have tried and re-oiled all 3. There is a cheapo no name, absolute rubbish, a Sunrace, very noisy and worn, but the Shimano one is now very quiet, just need to try it on the road.
The reason for changing the wheels is exploding tyres, now traced to worn brake blocks . Ears still ringing from this morning's big bang.
Oh yes there might be a new bike coming as this one is like me, getting old.
Thank you again.

7 speed freewheel recommendation
Morning All.
Long story - BUT
I need to buy a new 7 speed free wheel for my winter bike, so I can use my spare wheels
I have read that the Halfords offering can be a hit and miss quality wise.
Looking at SPA Cycles, they have Shimano and Sunrace.
Has anyone had any recent experience of the quality of either product.
I have 3 old blocks in my garage, but they all sound like a can of nails, despite thorough oiling as per recommendations on here.
The long term plan is to update to a more modern bike.
Thanks for your help on this.

Re: Do we really understand what’s happening to the cycle trade?
Recent high demand for bikes and related products has probably lead to the sort of arrogance that prevails with perceived success.
"WE ARE THE CYCLE INDUSTRY WE DO WHAT WE WANT"
A house builder said a similar thing to me, "WE ARE HOUSE BUILDERS WE DO WHAT WE WANT"
They all have a lot to learn about customers and hopefully mend their ways before they go out of business.
The cycle industry must have a short memory as it has suffered from very low periods, particularly in Britain, many times.
Cycling nearly died out in Britain before mountain bikes came along.

How about The Pacific Coast from the Canadian border to the Mexican border.
I think this is quite well known as internet searches will throw up some blogs.
Sounds quite exciting and about 3000km I believe.
