Re: Wikivoyage

From a quick scan it seems to allow a certain amount of "authorial colour". Take this on Crawley: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Crawley Oh I don't know, I think it could be even more colourful (speaking as a Horshamite ;)). I've used Wikivoyage a fair bit and my general one word opinion ...

Re: Simple Question: Is anyone else fed up with having to be PC ?

<snip> How far should we go? I draw the line at re-writing Huckleberry Finn . It would simply make no sense, and surely the most socially-aware reader will understand that... A lot of old stuff is outrageously racist, sexist, ageist etc. I do remember quickly re-reading the Famous Five when I bough...

Re: Eight O'clock Pips

If I was listening to (say) The Archers in the workshop on DAB, then came into the house and it was online on the iMac, it would be about a minute behind. Not timed it specifically, but about a minute, maybe a bit less. Yes, the online player uses the MPEG-DASH format which could cause that much of...

Mercalia, have you remembered any yet?

I want to remain in the EU.

I'm intrigued, if you want to remain in the EU then why did you vote to leave?

Re: Gatwick Drones

My understanding is that it is illegal to fly one of these outside direct line of sight by the person controlling it & I think the legal distance limit is 500m from the controller (assuming flying in the UK & assuming he isn't a licenced commercial drone pilot, which will change the rules s...

Why didn't she notice the trap door?

I'll let the title stand as is. We can make our own judgements about the choice of words and how they reflect upon the author. A general observation though. Our brains seem to be pretty good at deciding where to pay attention and where it may reasonably assume that no special attention is needed. D...

Re: Downs and Weald and return

1) Either route will give you some nice villages to cycle through and moderate terrain. As a general rule of thumb East Sussex is a smidge hillier than West Sussex, especially the Weald area. 2 & 3) I'd avoid Crawley altogether unless you want to use it for cheap accommodation. It's a post-war t...

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?

There's so much that could be done by communities if it was treated as an opportunity rather than a problem. Part of treating this event as an opportunity would be on the organisers to publicise it and it's advantages well in advance to the people of West Sussex. I can't speak for other areas but a...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Could be great if leaving leads to less trade, there is far too much of it now That's... a novel argument. Making money is... bad? people should get used to eating fewer bananas and more porridge, swedes, apples. Bananas should be an expensive treat As yes, those wretched European banana farms, pro...

I don't know about the Etrex settings but you can change coordinate formats in Osmand, go to Settings -> Global app settings -> Coordinate format. Hth.

Re: Cycle friendly Wetherspoons

Just me or is it always Remainers who jump onto threads shouting about boycotting establishments based on the referendum. Not aware of any time a Brexit supporter suggested boycotting something because it was a Remainers place. Are they bad losers? It's easy to find examples . On topic, the Lynd Cr...

Re: Route planning website - Vox Pop.

For 2 - is that with TCX files? (GPX tracks are polyline-only, GPX routes are turns only, and TCXs are both. I think.) Maybe I should be more proactive in OSM editing when I find missing links like I mentioned. I'm a bit hesitant as I'm not always sure quite what I'm doing & don't want to make ...

Re: Google Maps won't let me create a cycle route over Little Saint Bernard Pass???

Richard, since you're here, does cycle.travel apply the access:conditional tag to routing calculations? Rather than prohibiting access like Gmaps, perhaps a warning could be displayed if a route was created using the closed road during the closure time? No worries if it's not practical or possible t...
