Re: Best iPhone OSM editor?

In general I've found that if you are creating a way then a mouse/keyboard is far less prone to errors. I usually log the new feature as a .gpx track and then trace over the track into OSM. That being said, I've heard some good things about Go Map. I think that may be the only app for iOS that creat...

Re: cycle.travel route planner

Which flag in OSM does that? Ideally, bicycle=yes, permissive or designated, but the routing apps try to infer it from other tags if absent. https://cycle.travel/advice/map/details describes more. Thanks. Your link describes how Cycle.travel interprets OSM tags. I was asking what flag (tag?) sets t...

Re: New words/vocab on this forum, these fora, forae, forums, chatboards..

Shouldn't the title read 'This Forum' anyway, it's called 'Cycling UK Forum' - singular ? In the original Latin usage the plural of forum is fora. In the specific modern usage the plural is forums. Forae is not a word in either language. On a related topic, I've only ever seen virii used in referen...

Re: A funny kind of tea shop?

To my mind the difficulty with Tea Shop discussions is that some posters don’t behave like they were in that environment. Some seem unable to act in the civil way one would expect in a tea shop and unable to accept opinions divergent from their own; for discussion you do need to be able to compare ...

Re: Downslink (West Sussex) to be closed for 3 months around West Grinstead

A quick update on this as I cycled from Christ's Hospital to Partridge Green on the Downs Link today. The whole of Area 2 and 3 is open even though the work is clearly still ongoing from West Grinstead station south for about 1/2 a mile. It's very rideable though, certainly no worse than before work...

Re: Downslink (West Sussex) to be closed for 3 months around West Grinstead

Anyone more local than me care to comment? I suppose it's nice to see WSCC putting the bare minimum of effort into upkeep for our part of the Downslink. Oh, comment about the diversion? Yeah, looks good. ;) I perhaps wouldn't bother getting back on the DL at Partridge Green, just head straight for ...

Re: Heathrow or Gatwick?

Are you wedded to the National Express? Because there's also hourly direct trains from Gatwick Station to Portsmouth that are comparable in duration and price.

Re: Best-laid plans of mice and men

Hi Rob,

We were also on that flight, sorry to hear you didn't get any further than Toulouse. Our luggage arrived after 4 days. To Easyjet's credit they have (eventually) offered us more money in compensation than the amount that we claimed. We just had the compensation confirmed this week as well.

Re: Wikivoyage

From a quick scan it seems to allow a certain amount of "authorial colour". Take this on Crawley: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Crawley Oh I don't know, I think it could be even more colourful (speaking as a Horshamite ;)). I've used Wikivoyage a fair bit and my general one word opinion ...

<snip> How far should we go? I draw the line at re-writing Huckleberry Finn . It would simply make no sense, and surely the most socially-aware reader will understand that... A lot of old stuff is outrageously racist, sexist, ageist etc. I do remember quickly re-reading the Famous Five when I bough...

Re: Eight O'clock Pips

If I was listening to (say) The Archers in the workshop on DAB, then came into the house and it was online on the iMac, it would be about a minute behind. Not timed it specifically, but about a minute, maybe a bit less. Yes, the online player uses the MPEG-DASH format which could cause that much of...

I'm intrigued, if you want to remain in the EU then why did you vote to leave?

Re: Gatwick Drones

My understanding is that it is illegal to fly one of these outside direct line of sight by the person controlling it & I think the legal distance limit is 500m from the controller (assuming flying in the UK & assuming he isn't a licenced commercial drone pilot, which will change the rules s...

Why didn't she notice the trap door?

I'll let the title stand as is. We can make our own judgements about the choice of words and how they reflect upon the author. A general observation though. Our brains seem to be pretty good at deciding where to pay attention and where it may reasonably assume that no special attention is needed. D...

Re: Downs and Weald and return

1) Either route will give you some nice villages to cycle through and moderate terrain. As a general rule of thumb East Sussex is a smidge hillier than West Sussex, especially the Weald area. 2 & 3) I'd avoid Crawley altogether unless you want to use it for cheap accommodation. It's a post-war t...
