Re: Self-assembley of Black Brompton wheel set advice

thanks for the advice so far folks

I'm beggining to build a picture of what might be required to self assembley . Cheers.

Do people think truing a 16" Brompton wheel might actually be easier than truing a larger wheel ? Just because they're so much more compact ?

Cheers

Self-assembley of Black Brompton wheel set advice

Hi

Seeking some basic advice about pros/cons - ease/issues of building/assembling my own black Brompton wheel set.

I've been quoted by a wheel builder:
1) Black wheels from scratch with a BWR hub. c.£560.
3) Brompton pre-made black wheels convert other parts to all black c.£500-600.

But i'm wondering if i can get that price down by assembling the wheel parts myself.

I was linked to these parts in a previous post:
Black rims:
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rims-tape/m ... k-28-hole/
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rims-tape/m ... k-28-hole/
Half Black rims and spokes:
https://brilliantbikes.co.uk/84-brompto ... front-rear

So a couple of specific questions:

1. Do i need a 'wheel building jig' or can i do it without as these 2 youtube video guys seem to show:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YBVUiAeLmQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-RKN4clIGs

2. How do i know what size spokes to get ? My wheel set includes a BWR 6 speed rear wheel
https://brilliantbikes.co.uk/84-brompto ... front-rear
Do Brompton wheels use stright gauge, double butted or single butted spokes ?

3. Is there a specific type of nipple should i use ? I want them in black also which i think seem widely available ?

4. What size inside tape do i need to buy ?

Is there anything else people can think of ?

Much appreciated..

Re: Should i buy all-black bike wheel rims ?

Thanks folks - all comments really helpful building a wider picture

Someone yesterday said to me that coated spokes and nipples flake or even snap - does anyone have any experience of this ?

I was walking around town yesterday (London UK) and i couldn't help noticing just how popular black wheel rimmed bikes were. They seem to be on hybrid electric / mountain style bikes popular today in urban environments. Maybe they all come equiped with disc brakes rather than brake pads today / or maybe the coating tech has moved on ??

All other comments noted - the views on anodised seem mixed - some say good, some ok , some not so different to powder coated / not good on aluminium. General comment of 1/4 - 1/3 life noted.

Re: ceramic - i don't understand what this refers to - does this mean the coating is cermaic on aluminium/steel rim ?

I've approached Minimod Taiwan to ask what the spec 'black gloss' coating actually means.

Should i buy all-black bike wheel rims ?

Hi

I want to swap out my silver/plain metal bike wheel rims for all black. See:

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/wheelsbromp ... rim-black/

But should i be concerned the brake pad surface will wear down and rub off the black coating ?
Are there standards or quality issues i should check / ask about before purchase ?

If any one else has experience of all colour bike wheel rims - appreciate any advice or comment.

Cheers.

Re: Brompton folding bike - silver to black wheel re-fit advice

Any comment on if the brake block contact surface is best left metal / no colour coating ? I note some brompton wheels come all black while others leave the break block surface unpainted:

Re: Brompton folding bike - silver to black wheel re-fit advice

"Brompton wheels can be indifferently built from new, so you'll probably end up with wheels that stay true for longer."

Hi - sorry can i ask you to confirm what you meant by the above as i didn't quie understand.

When you say just build them from new - i'm assuming you mean purchase the black rims and spoke sets and rebuild the wheel around my own gear hub . Is that what you mean ?

Brompton folding bike - silver to black wheel re-fit advice

Hi

I have a couple of questions on switching my Brompton Folding Bike silver/wheel set out for black rimmed versions.

1. The sets tend to come in pairs - front / back wheel.
As my Brompton is 6 standard gears, (2019 superlight model) , can i get away with purchasing a 3 gear hub set or do i need to purchase one which states 6 gear hub ?
I'm a bit confused as i thought the 6 standard gears runs off a Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub.

My Brompton is a 2019 superlight
6 standard gears
h type
with mudguards / no luggage rack

I've found several options :
mini mods 1
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/wheelsbromp ... rim-black/
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/wheelsbromp ... rim-black/
mini mods 2
https://www.bikegang.co.uk/bikeganghut/ ... p408880468
original (2nd hand)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325099152922 ... JGEALw_wcB
or
https://www.bikegang.co.uk/bikeganghut/ ... p187533568

If anyone can recommend or advise on this project or on these or other available wheel sets, i would be greatful.

cheers

Re: Is this hex screw generic and if so what is it

@johnathon
dimensions:
1. Hex head diameter = 112mm / depth=1mm
2. Shank diameter = 9mm / depth=2mm
3. Screw diameter =
Inside thread to inside thread = 5mm
Outside thread to outside thread = 6mm
4. Thread dimensions ? (not sure what this is)
The raised thread parts looks seperated by 1mm distance groves
5. Thread barrel length =
underside of shank to tip of bolt = 9mm / including 2mm depth of shank - total = 11mm

@colin54
that bolt looks very close visually . I dont need the hex head to be flat i am happy to replace it with a protruding head - its the head-shank-thread + wheel combo i need to get right - i attach 3 more images showing how the non sheard bolt hex head sits flush in the wheel (middle picture)
If i can id the M size hex bolt for sure - then i just need to id the right shank type (the bolt thread length can also be slighlty longer - isn't exactly constrained)
I'd ideally like a pair so they look the same tho - i'm afraid i wasn't very clear on interpreting your technical jargon regarding how or what you used to duplicate the bolt
"8mm OD like the shoulder and I filed it to just over 2mm thick (to keep the threads intact), I've used a washer the same diameter as your existing low-head. I'd found a long M6 low head "
If using my bolt dimensions above you think you can crack the hack - let me know - i am happy to source the parts / be linked to the parts required - (may be useful to know for future) or aquire off you - (v generous offer - thankyou) -

Are you able to id the M size from this ? is it an M5 or M6 ? Whats the difference between an M5 and M6 btw ?
Anything else let me know - inc any more feedback on the product page link
thanks again folks - appreciated

Re: Is this hex screw generic and if so what is it

Nouns aside 8) ...

What else do you need from me to resolve this ? Also looking at the link posted above :
https://www.accu.co.uk/en/572-low-head- ... der-screws
Thanks for finding that ! However not being very bolt savvy - i wasnt very sure which of those bolts would be the one to select. There are 43 pages of bolts to naviagte. Also the shank part in the picture seems much longer than the one in my picture and some of the bolts cost half as much just for a single item - as the entire wheel set price was ....

Further help appreciated ... cheers

Re: Is this hex screw generic and if so what is it

@johnathon - yes

im wondering if i could just source a genric M5 or M6 hex screw and substitute the shank part with a couple of washers / sleeve as j says ?
The wheels are supposed the fix loose to enable free turning - do you know if washers / sleeves come in generic sizes and if so what size i should look for - the shank diameter looks to me abput 8mm and the thickness 2 mm

what thinks ya'll ?

cheers again

Re: Is this hex screw generic and if so what is it

Jdsk wrote: 1 Aug 2021, 6:02pm No, it's not a standard screw (or bolt) because it has that stepped down part under the head.

Why is the part at the lower right that shows the damaged hex socket separate from the screw above it?

Where's it from?

see this - its from a brompton folding bike third party telescopic rear wheel
