Re: New bike suggestions for commuting to work

Giant Escape.

Best bang/buck for commuting

Of course, this depends on your commute but as a general purpose bike, the Escape is excellent.

Re: helmets from Why wear black?

Helmets don't help you in an accident? Hi vis doesn't make you more noticable It is preferable to not wear a helmet in an accident? Black is more appropriate for cycling in the dark? Participation rates for cycling is paramount and userps safety? Safety gear should be banned? Flat earth logic, all ...

Re: Four year old killed by bike helmet.

As in the other arguments on cycling safety (of which i have had to let go due to the ferocity of the opinions), you continue to confuse the secondary effects of helmet wearing to negate their use. A helmet is simply their to help reduce the severity of an injury in an minor/moderate accident. How ...

Re: helmets from Why wear black?

... Job sites and what have you are something else. For one thing, the use of PPE is evidence based. For another thing, employers have responsibility to prevent incidents and injuries. They have to have insurance in case things go wrong. Employers can require employees to use PPE, without shifting ...

I feel exactly the opposite, however, neither opinion is relevent when it comes to the usefulness (or not) of a helmet when in a cycling accident.

Re: helmets from Why wear black?

As with "why wear black", the answer is simple. Because we have freedom of choice on if/when we wear helmet. Long may it remain a choice, it is a personal assessment of the risks. Parents decide what is best for their child, it is not for others to interfere. Even if one of those choices ...

Re: helmets from Why wear black?

You have missed your vocation as an interrogator. I think I made it clear that I think that banging my head is extremely unlikely, and if it were to happen I believe that a helmet does not give a worthwhile amount of protection. May I demand a answer? If you were to be struck by lightning, would yo...

Re: helmets from Why wear black?

I have no idea why you continue with these strawman arguments.

The only thing of any relevence in a discussion of helmet use when cycling is the use of helmets when cycling. :?

Re: helmets from Why wear black?

Yes, even then I'd rather not be wearing a helmet because it would mean that I had needlessly increased my risk of being in a cycling accident and if it's a head injury that matters (rather than the sort of scrape my woolly hat will also protect against), it was probably due to colliding with anoth...

Re: helmets from Why wear black?

I asked this before but got no answer, I take it in a cycling accident involving head injury, you would rather not be wearing a helmet? Yes, even then I'd rather not be wearing a helmet because it would mean that I had needlessly increased my risk of being in a cycling accident and if it's a head i...

Re: Four year old killed by bike helmet.

Exactly. As I said, read the forum for yourself and make your own mind up. None of the things you listed are an irrelevance IMO and many other people's opinion either. Make you own mind up. Back to the case in point regarding the little girl. The helmet killed her. The fact that she wasn't cycling,...

Re: Four year old killed by bike helmet.

That's the question we ask every time a kid breaks their arm and the press declare that had he been wearing a helmet it would all have been fine. Or a kid gets killed by a person using a car, and obviously their chest injuries wouldn't have happened if they had a magic hat on. The evidence absolute...
