What actually happens if you over-tighten your seat post clamp?

Possibly daft question...! What are the potential consequences of over-tightening seat post clamp bolts? Damaged frame, seat post, or both? I always assumed both, but in most discussions online about seat post torque, people seem more worried about damaging carbon seat posts but not frames. Damaging...

Bike paint protection tape recommendations

Hi,

I'm looking for recommendations on what protection tape to buy to stop my bike paint from chipping. Had a quick look on Amazon and most seem to have mixed reviews, except for Gorilla tape. I wasn't sure about getting this as it's not designed for this purpose - could it damage the paint?

Thanks

Discomfort on turbo

Hi Does anyone else get pain/discomfort on the turbo that they don’t get while riding outdoors? I use the same bike indoors and outdoors, but for some reason I get pain in my right hip, quad muscles and shin when on the turbo. I don’t think it’s caused by being in the same position all the time as i...

Do you have an idea what you might buy?

I'm looking at a Ribble R872 Disc. Their HQ is not too far from me, so I'll be able to go pick it up (once they've got some in stock, that is!)

Re: Frame damaged on first ride

Update: Retailer is taking the bike back for an inspection. Not sure what that will involve, but it makes me slightly worried that they'll try to say the chain came off due to my error if they can't recreate the problem on a work stand. They'd probably need to actually ride it, up a hill, to make it...

Re: Frame damaged on first ride

Could this damage to the chain link have occurred whilst trying to remove the jammed chain from behind the chainring? I doubt it - how could that move the connecting pin anywhere? Yes I'd agree with that. Before the 'Magic Links' became the norm, I must have fitted dozens of chains, using the "...

Re: Frame damaged on first ride

Update: was just looking at the chain and it looks like the connecting pin has been put in badly - it isn’t flush with the side of the link, in other words it hasn’t been pushed all the way through. I’ve included a couple of pictures of the inside/back of the chain link. The link feels loose and lo...

Re: Frame damaged on first ride

How many times has the advice on these threads to buy from a reputable LBS?. I would have bought from an LBS if they had any bikes in stock at all. It would have been the same price. I’m hoping they’ll take responsibility since they claim their bikes are ready to ride out of the box, fully checked ...

Re: Frame damaged on first ride

The chain has unshipped repeatedly in THIRD gear. Surely we are not saying that its the job of the front mech to keep the chain on the inner chainwheel IN THIRD? Then in first or second, the chain would be sawing away at the front mech? I would be looking for a loose or bent chainring, or damaged t...

Re: Frame damaged on first ride

Is the 28 your largest cog? If so, for it to drop off the inner ring when in 1st gear rather than changing gear it sounds like the front mech inner limit screw is too far out. I suspect the outer cage plate was too close to the chain and flexing of the frame and cranks was enough to cause the probl...

Re: Frame damaged on first ride

IF its sold as fully set up then fully set up it should be. One could argue that the customer should exercise caution in riding his new bike, but why should the customer know anything ? Its for the shop to set it up properly in the first place. Doesnt sound like the paint is very good. What do you ...

Re: Frame damaged on first ride

I would always check the indexing/limits on any bike before riding whether bought online or not.I would also give any bolts a once over to make sure they're secure. On our last Majorca trip my mate brought his brand new, never ridden,Planet-X Pro-Carbon along. It was delivered a few days before we fl...
