Re: How's your weather?

A bit of old news, but this was the coldest I saw during the cold snap at the beginning of January. The junior family members say that they saw -33.4'c at one point the same morning. Our previous lowest temperature record here had been around -24'c.
Cold_Snap.jpeg

I had just lit the fire in the kitchen when I took the picture which explains the relatively low interior temperature. We kept ourselves warm burning wood in our stoves but we did go through a LOT of wood for a week or so. Our supply of silver birch turned out to be less dry than we would have liked. So we bought four 1500l bags of properly dry silver birch from a local supplier and have used two of them already. The rest has been stacked. Our existing supply of silver birch will get burnt next winter.

After having lived in Norway for some time I now smile when I hear a UK weather forecaster saying that "temperatures will plummet to -5'c tonight". We will get some cold air from Siberia in the next couple of days and temperatures are set to drop below -20'c from our current -8'c. :D
I know that feeling. I wear shorts all year round and people always ask me if I feel cold. Having worked in Finland then it's simply not that cold over here.
That said I did forget once that in some of the airports in Finland you have to walk from the plane to the terminal. I was still in my UK clothes. in February. THAT was cold
We had a few Christmas breaks in Røros before we moved to Norway. Coming back form one trip where temperatures had dropped to -29'c we arrived at Schiphol in the same clothes we had been wearing in Norway. It was +1'c, damp air and windy on arrival. THAT was cold.

Re: How's your weather?

Currently -21.6'c outside. Inside temperatures vary at the moment from +20'c to +27'c, except the cellar and one bathroom which are cooler. I am a little worried that the pipes above our drinking water borehole pump might freeze. Although the pump house has 40 cm of light powder snow on the roof and round the walls. The air trapped between the snowflakes should provide some insulation against tonight's temperatures.

Re: How's your weather?

This last week we have had a fair bit of snow. There is now 40-50 cm of snow in the garden where we don't clear the snow. I have spent maybe 7 hours using the snow blower this week. Fortunately the snow was quite cold and powdery which is easier for the snow blower to cope with.

I remember seeing minus 22 on a thermometer at our model flying club in Dec 1994 even the glow fuel for the engines froze in the carburetors and crank below ( two stroke engine ) so the props would even turn over. That's the coldest I remember but my da told me the winter of 63 was real bad.
I like it when it's that cold. We had minus 22c twice last winter and minus 20c as well. I love seeing the ice crystals hanging in the air.

Prior to moving to Sweden, I'd experienced down to minus 18c in Germany and about minus 13c in the UK.
During our first winter in Hallingdal we experienced temperatures below -30 with an extended period where the temperatures varied between -15 and -25. Below -15 your nose hairs start to stick and unfreeze repeatedly, a strange sensation that you get used to. In our first year there the difference between the warmest and coldest temperature was 65'c.

Brrrrrr!
Where are you?
I don't think we have had lower than about -1 yet, and that is was before dawn a few days ago. The weather forecast for the next few days has our overnight lows at about +7c.

Al
The main use of those fans IMHO is to show clearly that the top of the stove is hot.

I have had three in a row on top if the first storey of our Ulefos 169 stove and you definitely feel the draught when the stove gets hot.

slowster wrote: 1 Dec 2023, 1:33pm The question then would be what the intentions were of whoever bought the design rights.
I understood the question, I'm just not sure anyone will want to buy the IP. The value will be those things they have patents for, which I suspect will be quite minor, it wasn't a revolutionary hub, it was mostly the application of well established technology. For example the hydraulic shifting was something new for a hub gear, but it's probably too commonplace elsewhere for it to be patented.
Anyone buying the IP is buying a product concept that is a competitor for the well established Rohloff hubs, The Rohloff is a mature product that has also been under continual development.

Norway is a strange place, sometimes niche products can be produced here and be successful. However, Norway is in the EEA but outside the EU's Custom's Union which inevitably adds costs to components bought outside of Norway and any raw materials sourced from outside Norway. Once you export the hub to EU countries then the customer will be paying local VAT, possibly import duties and an administration charge for calculating the VAT. Then there are other issues that make the business of launching such a produce more difficult than say in Germany.

Re: Heat in the home

Can we have another option in the poll, "I don't have central heating yet."

We are currently having a central heating system installed with 4x 500l accumulator tanks in the cellar to be heated by three wood burning ranges with a combined output of around 60 kW to water plus a total of 15 kW to the cooking surfaces/surrounding air. Once the above are connected up we need to get the distribution side of the system set up. It will be radiators with dumb thermostatic valves on them. Hot water for showers will come from a heat exchanger system from the hottest accumulator tank to our current immersion heater tank. We shouldn't have to use the immersion heater much if the system works properly.

The house has been warmed up to now by 4 wood burning stoves in regular use and 2 more often in use. Actually two of them are old coal burning stoves which work well with wood, particularly so with wood blocks. Large pans on 4 of the stoves have been meeting most of our hot water needs for the last year.

Outside it is -14 at the moment and where I am inside it is a steady +20'c. Burning a mix of pine and silver birch.

The property was build with a layer of powdered clay between the floors and the ceilings. Not much use as insulation but it does work well as a heat store. Once the house is at normal temperature then a drop in overnight temperatures of 10-15'c will not cause a significant reduction in morning temperatures inside the house. We plan to have cellulose fibres blown into the air gaps above the layers of clay. Then we will have a heat store and insulation and a reduction in convective heat loss in the air gaps.

Yuk, no wonder my Norwegian pals emigrated

Al
In a month or so we can expect to have colder temperatures making driving more predictable and a lovely blanket of white snow that reflects sunlight making the place look much brighter and more cheery than say Warrington or Wallasey at the same time of year.

I am also fortunate to have a mixed cultural heritage. This has lead to me becoming joint owner in a couple of apartments in a much warmer southern EU country. So, as I get older I should always have a bolt-hole or two to retreat to should the weather start getting me down.

Anyway, grey and damp again today but the snow has mostly melted. We might actually see the sun this coming week. :D

Re: Extra short cranks - bodger's delight

The long cranks are back on the trailer bike.

Child number 2 finished treatment at the end of this summer and the first end of treatment check up including a review of all scans taken during treatment showed no recurrence of the original problem. Fingers crossed as you never know with cancer. Monthly check ups for the next year.

The snow season has started her in our bit of Norway and that marks the end of our cycling season. I think we might still be using the trailer bike next year unless our local council's disability aids department can find a suitable two wheeled children's electric assisted bike for them. We do not know at this point what their stamina will be like, possibly not enough for even a modest 30 km cycling day somewhere flat like Denmark. The long term effects of cancer treatment are just that and can change/appear some time after treatment is finished.

One day at a time.
