A Close Shave

Hi all, It's been six months since I learned to ride a bike (I'm 28). A few people in our family have had nasty experiences out on the road so from a young age I was put right off the idea, hence I only plucked up the courage to give it a go when the pandemic kicked off. As I've mentioned in other t...

Re: Sticky STI levers

This is the bike, it's only four months old, and I bought it from Argos for £350 which I'm betting you'll tell me is why it's crap. :D

It's not something I'm confident to attempt, but do you have a link to a good video for that?

Re: Sticky STI levers

That’s a symptom of the return spring coming unhooked. It’s a quirk of the design that can befall anyone who has folded the rubber hood forward then, accidentally or otherwise, pushed the lever inwards. The advise I was given was dismantle (Difficult and complicated) or replace. BTW, it can happen ...

Re: Sticky STI levers

Thanks for getting back to me folks. In terms of the little lever that does not flick back into position, I haven't managed to identify the name of the specific "bit" that is holding it out of position so I have taken a close up of what is going on. The best way I can describe it is, it se...

Sticky STI levers

Hi all, Sort of following on from my thread about front derailleur issues, I've acquired another problem that like the last c0ck-up I'm hoping to use as a learning curve rather than an expensive trip to the bike shop, which is where you good people come in. In the midst of the fannying around I have...

Re: Front derailleur - grinding chain issues

As the video attempt went tits up I have attached an image of what is happening.

As you can see the smaller lever has become completely stiff and freezes after any shifting, up or down. Have I fooked it up completely or is this easily fixed?

Re: Front derailleur - grinding chain issues

Thanks all, your responses really helped and inspired me to get this fixed....sort of... I finally managed to get enough tension in the front derailleur cable to get it to shift up to the larger of the two chainrings, but in my infinite foolishness I ended up messing around again because frankly the...

Re: Front derailleur - grinding chain issues

Hi, just a bit of a progress update as I know you will all have been very anxious to know how I'm getting on with this. A big thanks to you all, taking all of your advice into account I have at least managed to bring the old girl back into rideable condition. I decided to start from scratch with the...

Re: Front derailleur - grinding chain issues

Hi roubaixtuesday, You're right I haven't been very clear exactly what I'm not happy with. For the time being I'm not that bothered about the front gears as I rarely use the higher ring. My priority for now is to stop the chain rubbing against the front derailleur cage when in 4th gear upwards. As I...

Re: Front derailleur - grinding chain issues

Thanks a lot for your replies. For the time being I'd like to be able to use as many gears as possible without the grinding noise which is definitely coming from the front derailleur cage. Currently, as I say the grinding sets in from the 4th gear upwards, but I can't seem to get the derailleur to s...

Front derailleur - grinding chain issues

Hi all. Please forgive the incredible naivety in anything I write in the following post. I am extremely new to cycling - yes very much part of the Covid-inspired wave of riders - I didn't actually know how to ride a bike pre-2020 and I'm 28 years old, but since March I have been averaging 10-30 mile...
