Re: Glen Fruin - which road?

Used to cycle Glen Fruin a couple of times a week whilst travelling in to the Naval Base. I'd avoid the A817 before 0900 as you get a lot of traffic going towards the base a fair few think they're rally drivers - can remember a trip as a passenger and trying to convince the driver that 90 odd was fa...

Re: Shetland and Orkney

Was in Shetland and Orkney a few years ago. Campsite below in Shetland was excellent. http://www.eshaness.moonfruit.com/home/4541822099 Also used B&Bs in Shetland which I found very overpriced for what they provided. Stayed in a couple of Bods (like Bothys but less remote and more homely) which ...

Rear derailleur cage plate

I've managed, through sheer carelesness whilst changing gear, to snap the inner plate on my 105 rear derailleur. I can't find anywhere on line that sells the plates but don't want to have to fork out for a complete unit. Does anyone know where I can get hold of a plate only?

Re: Queueing etiquette

Can only endorse thirdcrank's advice wrt reversing - a week or so when, waiting patiently behind a car at a t junction, it started reversing. Saw the white lights just in time to throw myself and bike out of the way. Driver saw me as I banged tail of his car, looked startled and then drove off forwa...

Disc rotor with 4 out of 6 bolts question

I've been given a rear MTB wheel from a friend to possibly replace the broken and very poor quality one I currently have. The issue is that I can only fit 4 out of the 6 rotor bolts; it came with one hole stripped out and in a moment of inattention/incompetence I sheared another bolt in place which ...

Re: Cycling on Shetland

Did a Shetland and Orkney tour a few years ago, both were excellent and intend returning to Shetland. In Shetland the furthest North we got was Eshaness (possibly the most stunning/best campsite I've stayed at). Agree with previous recommendations wrt ferry, we didn't get a cabin, crashed out in the...

Re: Aerosol painting a frame

I tried this once before; project build with a 1960's Holdsworth frame purchased from E-Bay so thought I'd do everything myself, not the most successful DIY project. I found it very difficult to achieve a consistent finish (apparently tubes are amongst the hardest things to spray paint well) and end...

Re: Why am I invisible on roundabouts?

Putting it down to stuff happens; 22 years since my last vehicle interaction (and that was definitely my idiotic teenage selfs fault) so not too bad when you hear what some are unlucky enough to have happen to them. Was in the middle of the lane, indicating with full arm out and had enough time to a...

Why am I invisible on roundabouts?

1st week in Portsmouth having moved down from nearly 10 years of incident free cycling in Glasgow, I was looking forward to commuting in much better weather. Less than a mile from home, turning right at a quietish roundabout in correct road position following a car at a reasonable distance; as the c...

Re: Thinking of winter pain...

I have Surly Cross check which meets all of your requirements. I think it's the most versatile frame set I've owned and use it for commuting, touring and as a winter training bike. A number of people would recommend a fully fledged touring bike instead,

Re: Trailer

How does a 2 wheel trailer, like the carry freedom Y-frame, perform on surfaces such as canal towpaths? Does anyone have experience of mono wheel trailers like the bobyak? Have read the pros and cons in various reviews but still undecided. Plan is to put child seat on bike and tow touring gear, no t...

Re: Treated myself to a new bike

On getting rid of our second car my wife was strangely reluctant to let me invest the £6k on new bikes even though my cycle commuting allowed us to go to 1 car, can't understand it myself!

Re: Cambridge to Iona

Sleeper with bike should be no issue at all, I use it most weeks. Call Scotrail telesales closer to the time (think reservations open 3 months prior to the journey) and you can book bike and ticket at the same time. If not travelling back on a peak day, e.g. Sunday, then look for a 'bargain berth' a...
