Mine works

I just haven't been able to update some of the sizes (which I got originally from a table on the old CTC website).

Re: Everthing South Of Exeter

Good find. Enjoyed the video but don't really know what to make of it. The line seems worth saving.

Me too. But what's the average age of members on here? I bet you can count in one hand the number of regular posters under 30...

Even if it's true, does it matter? I don't think so. Besides, 'oldies' are an increasing market.

LOL

I have never tried deleting my FaceBook account. It's just there, doing nothing apart from eavesdropping on a few auld acquaintances.

Well, I suppose whatever comes after it is the future.

I dislike Facebook because I find it too messy. As a stackoverflow user I spotted this recently: stackexchange bicycles - I'm not sure I'd call it a community though.

It depends what you want - no frills info? chit chat? regulars? small pond? big pond?

I enjoy these forums, coming up to six years in June.

Very true. Off-topic, but "community" is often a figment of the imagination. And "sustainable". Media buzzwords that have lost their meaning.

Edwards wrote:So if this country stopped using all fossil fuels today, when would the storms that cut this railway line stop?

That's the thing in a nutshell. Each individual knows that his/her actions will affect nothing much, and that even if the whole nation took action the limited effect would take decades to kick in - and that's if you believe man-made global warming even exists. If there is a stand to be made it's an ethical one.

I suspect many people in a cold country just shrug their shoulders and think a bit more warmth might actually be a good thing.

(Meanwhile the Environment Agency puts job cuts put on hold and Princes help deliver sandbags)

mjr wrote:... now that some home counties have flooded, suddenly "money is no object". When recent-CON-loss Norfolk flooded, it was left to a local MP to say that "no extra money was being made available". When often-LD-Con-marginal Somerset flooded, it was "No extra money will be given" ...

Recent CON losses and marginals are where you'd think money would be spent if it was all party politics.

Cameron's "whatever money is needed, we will spend it" leaves open the question of what is needed. Lord Smith has talked about the economic benefit of flood defences and if there isn't any, no money. There must surely be more criteria than purely economic benefit. After all, it's not a new project like HS2 - the homes affected are things that already exist.

Ditto. I am wondering how long it takes for a house to recover from inundation. It's hard to imagine.

Edwards wrote:... The politicians need to blame anybody or anything other than themselves.

They would be better finding out the real cause of these problems and coming up with proper solutions. Fat chance of this happening with this lot.

It was probably the lot before who dunnit, or didn't. The point I was trying to make upthread is that compared to (say) the security services who make themselves aware of all kinds of potential threats, the government and the Environment Agency (one or the other or both), and Network Rail in the case of the collapsing/flooding railway tracks, don't seem to have done their homework. That, or they have the wrong priorities. An increase in rainfall was foreseeable at least a decade ago. The 2008 financial crash was also foreseen but nothing was done. These are big issues affecting large numbers of people.

Politicians care only about the next election so perhaps this thing is everyone's fault.

Actually I got that wrong. The Environmental Agency (who Pickles is blaming) is based in Bristol. Partly wrong anyway.

NATURAL ANKLING wrote:... Latest new is that all railways to devon and cornwall is blocked ...

This doesn't affect me directly as I live on a hill in Lancashire and have no plans to travel to Devon and Cornwall in the short term but the whole thing makes me angry. Modern Britain and a main line railway falls into the sea. I don't know who's fault it is exactly but I imagine they are well paid and live in London (and it's no use continually blaming everything on climate change).

It's basic forseeable stuff. The locals knew it. I thought the same about the 2008 financial crash. A few people in high places saw it coming and a lot of people in low places did too, but the ship of fools sailed on. HS2 shows that somebody can think ahead (whether you agree with it or not) - some important public services don't seem to manage it.

I think the judge's wig idea is better. All cyclists who don't have long blonde hair should wear a judge's wig.
