Re: Troll poll

If you use the "Friend & Foes" feature to censure a FOE, the posts of the foe are presented as . . .

"This post was made by KTM690 who is currently on your ignore list. Display this post."

The posts are hidden from view UNLESS you explicitly click the link to see each one.

. . . .which doesn't really do much except for those with insufficient self-discipline to be drawn back into the seemly endless loop.

It's good to hear that you are doing your bit too, however, I fear that you are right in your final statement. What we require to reduce the rate of the increasing damage is nothing less than the complete inversion of materialistic values. Where the wasteful showoff is shunned and held in low-esteem by society. The bloke with shiny, big car & house doesn't get the girl and is seen as ignorant and selfish.
It has taken us hundreds of generations & thousands of years to get to our current cultural values. Do you think we can change it all in the blink of an eye ??

How about . . . get down to Newhaven, ferry across to Dieppe, take the Avenue Verte** down to Forges-les-Eaux. Then work your way down to Louviers to pick up the valley of the river Eure. Follow the Eure down to Chartres. Nip up to Paris - if you like a bit of city contrast. Wander back the same way or vary according to taste.
CTC have a further decription of this in their "Routes" section, but if you get a map you can't really go wrong. ( and if you do it doesn't matter :D )**http://www.voiesvertes.com/htm/departement76_av.htm

I'm still trying to figure this out. Amongst you intelligent & thoughtful lot I am prepared to discuss what I'm doing sustainability-wise. Out in the real world I sense that people around me are, at best, uninterested in such things.
The publicity about GW has never been so prominent. All worthy bodies ( and even the government ) exhalting us to do good stuff and yet I feel as though I'm getting no tangible reward for my efforts.
e.g. Us cyclists should be praised by the rest of society for our sustainable transport. ?? Do you feel valued, as a cyclist by other road users ??
One would think that there may be some changes in the taxation system to reward sustainable behaviour. Do you know of anything significant ?? . . . I mean significant, not just the lip-service & token tinkering.
Maybe the problem lies here. If loads of people stopped leading wasteful and unsustainable lives the economy would stop growing, then contract. The unemployment figures would rise ( hopefully the frivolous & wasteful activities first ). The voters might not like that !!
Wow, what a dilemma. :!:

Wow, I'm impressed. I hope such virtuous changes manage to gather momentum and spread throughout the unsustainable societies.
Here are a couple of slightly bonkers tips . . . . ( or maybe not so bonkers after all).

I switched off the gas supply for most of the spring, summer & autumn last year. No heating. Only small amounts of hot water from a kettle. During that long hot year I took cold showers only : very refreshing : not a problem. Since November I have used about £5 worth of gas for a quick blast heat and the occasional warm shower.

Not a GW solution, but a scarce resource issue :
I had a water meter fitted. The bill dropped immediately from £200 p.a. to £80 p.a. It's so obvious that users with meters start to think about how they use the water.
I solved the limescale-in-toilet problem by flushing with water from the rainwater barrel. OK, I do have to carry the water in a bucket upstairs to fill the cistern, but we cyclists should seize opportunities for upper-body exercise where we can.

Global Warming - Are you doing anything ??

I look around me and see little evidence of anyone doing anything very much. This seems rather strange in view of the potentially huge threat.
In general, cyclists seem to be a bit more concerned than others. Are you doing anything? Have you any useful tips for the rest of us ??
