Re: Lighting a Trangia

Only fail when you run out of gas.....Takes about 3 months for that to happen. Just buy new before you go on a trip or fill your old one....Simples :D

Re: Lighting a Trangia

I would think this has been mentioned....But all I use is a gas cooker lighter from Tesco (and others) its like a ciggy lighter with a long plastic tube on so goes straight to the burner and your fingers are well away....Simples 8)

Re: St Malo-Cherbourg or St Malo-Caen

Just done similar route...Interest in WW2 and invasion beaches etc.
Day 1..Started Pompey to Chebourg from the port went across to Ravenoville using the D61 road and camped overnight at Camping Cormoran.
Day2..Ravenoville to St Mere Eglise then Carentan camping at Le Haut Dick.
Day 3.. Carentan to Point du Hoc, Omaha beach and Bayeaux. Camping at Camping Bords De L'Aure
Day 4..Bayeaux to Crepon and Rye then to Ouisterham camping at camping Les Pommiers
Day 5 General fannying about at Pegasus bridge and Merville battery etc

Average campsite fees around €6 a night per tent. Shopped mostly at Supermarches and cooked for ourselves (group of ten cyclists)

Nice route with quite a few off shoots to look at this and that.

All recorded here at crazy guy if you want a few pics and more info etc.

Re: D-day landing beaches, cycle camping

Like I say you just cant convince people about weight until they sample it for themselves....

To be fair to Springy though he made it all the way carrying all this cr+p and got to 500 metres of the return ferry port in Caen before his saddle bolt snapped and he had his first and last mechanical.

Re: Cleaning Up: - Yourself, Your Clothes / Kit / Doing Dishes.

You could always just use Milton baby wipes, sold in Sainsbury/Tesco etc for £2 I use them for cleaning pots on my Trianga plus plate and cup. Also good for hygiene under arms legs and sweaty bits.

I use em on my cycle camping trips never a prob even if there are washing up sinks

Re: The Rebrand is Essential to our Future

Can anyone give some accurate figures on current membership levels and how they have (if they have) followed the reported increase in cycling as a pastime here in Blighty?

I do tend to potter about bike shops, good grief I have even strayed into "word corrected to Halfords", however, I can't ever recall seeing any posters displayed informing the populous of the existence of CTC/CUK.

I'm on these boards because I have an interest in cycle camping and I find the other forum topics of interest in general, (apart from the road racing stuff) I enjoy opinions on the TdF , Olympics et al but I'm here because I did join once for a few years. I left due to the almost complete lack of anything else the club offered me. I didn't (in the end) see the point in paying my subs for a magazine and insurance cover. Insurance I can get cheaper myself. Mags I don't tend to bother with too often as I use the tinternetweb for research etc. So I let my membership end. I don't think anyone from HQ contacted me to ask why? or to encourage me to re think my view. In this day of computers it cant be that hard to manage a few thousand(?) members and know when their subs are due and if they have paid.

Re: The Rebrand is Essential to our Future

No longer a member of CTC /CUK but I do have a view on things....I was once a member of a camping club with all the members chat meetings etc being done via Yahoo.....Then some brain at HQ thought that as the membership was mainly older folk it would be a great idea to close the Yahoo system and enforce membership updates etc via Facebook thus (they believed) encouraging more trendy young bloods into the camping fold......Guess what....The membership floundered, members told the powers that be that they didn't want to be on Facebook and that the Yahoo system worked just fine, but no, all appeals were ignored and the change was enforced.

I hear from others that despite the change there are NO trendy young things falling over themselves to join the group. The reason IMHO is this.........You can re-brand a cabbage all you like, it will still be a cabbage. You can change names to all sorts of trendy multi media hip hop wording BUT you will still only get the same people to view/join your club as that is their interest anyway. Trainspotters tend to stick together, as do cyclists (even if you are a Lycra clad road warrior, snif) as do VW owners etc.

Re-brand is money lost on admin costs....end of.

Re: D-day landing beaches, cycle camping

RBM......Easy mileage, the longest day was 45 miles and the rest about 25...It was only just over 130 miles altogether. Read the blog link, some of the guys had not ridden since their paper round back in 1987!!

Mercalia....Despite warnings re weight and amount of gear, some still turned up ready for the off at Pompey with enough 'stuff' to last a three month stay in Africa then Antarctica..... Oh well they had to haul the stuff so it was their choice.
