That's correct, so it's likely that cyclists have more than one group of motivators for cycling.Jdsk wrote: ↑23 Apr 2024, 10:10amAren't these groups of factors rather than groups of cyclists?cycle tramp wrote: ↑22 Apr 2024, 6:52pmI think that ever was the case - at one end of the spectrum you have ne'r-do-wells (like myself) who are content with seemingly trivial mileage on machines that many wouldn't be seen chucking into a skip, but who cycle on a (almost) daily basis and at the other end those cyclists, whether touring, or racing but will only do so in groups and perhaps only on a weekend when there's no chance of rain.. but when they do cycle, attempt heroic feats such as distance cycled, speed and altitude climbed...almostvegancyclist wrote: ↑20 Apr 2024, 7:37pm
Hello,
Thanks for your questions!
The five groups (factors) were found through exploratory factor analysis. I'm only showing the results on two scales simply due to lack of space. But daily cyclists score significantly higher on all scales except 'Sports and socialising'.
Certainly it's possible someone to occupy more than one place along this spectrum but usually due to the maturing age and attitude of the rider...

Thanks for your comment. The five factors represent different motivators for cycling, so as you said it's likely that cyclists may be motivated by more than one.

Here's a poster showing what I've found. The responses show there are five groups of motivators for cycling. Daily cyclists scored higher on all except 'Sports and socialising' compared to non-daily cyclists. Please feel free to share what you think about the results! Re: Cycling motivation survey - looking for participants
Thank you for the comments. Unfortunately a survey study like this won't be able to reflect such details. But I hope to do more research with different designs in the future.freiston wrote: ↑16 Mar 2024, 10:30pm Done.
Personally I found it easier to complete than a lot of surveys of similar format - though I'm not sure if that helps - for instance, some questions I could easily identify rides that would be "strongly agree" and other rides that would be "strongly disagree" and so I chose "neither agree or disagree" when in truth, more rides are one extreme or the other rather than middle of the road. For example, there are some excellent cycle paths/routes in my city but also some roads and junctions that put the fear of god into me; bike parking at my railway station is excellent, but at my nearby retail park, the provided bike parking is meh and inconveniently located (and I've been told that bike theft is high there).

Beware, these are extremely triggering topics requiring STANAG level II safe spaces.

Thank you. I'll be doing Brevet Cymru in May, so say hello if you're coming!gbnz wrote: ↑16 Mar 2024, 6:24pm Completed. Any chance we can meet up to discuss cycling in detail? Thank you! Appreciate the feedback, I hadn't realised that it's urban centric.VinceLedge wrote: ↑16 Mar 2024, 6:34pm Done, some of the questions don't really work if you live rurally.

Re: Cycling motivation survey - looking for participants
Thank you for the comments - I appreciate the urban centrism feedback, that's something I haven't thought much about!
Also I appreciate the survey doesn't ask in depth questions about what cycling means to someone and why they do it. The results are more meaningful on an aggregate level where latent patterns in responses will become visible. However, I understand the questions can feel vague on an individual level.

Thanks for your observations.Nearholmer wrote: ↑16 Mar 2024, 4:54pm Yes, location, location, location, or perhaps facilities, facilities, facilities. It makes a huge difference to all this, because the better the facilities, the less strong other motivations need to be.
I’d also love to see some really good psychological research into why people don’t cycle. I mean something that gets beyond the “standard excuses/reasons” (safety in traffic; the weather; hills) and looks for deeper perceptions, what cycling symbolises to people, because I have an inkling that some of not-cycling has roots in self-perception vs perception of cycling/cyclists.
Anyway, good luck with it.
There's some research into how the image of the cyclist and cycling influence the propensity to cycle. According to one study (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tra.2006.09.002), 38% of people who never contemplated cycling for transport said they think it'd be uncharacteristic of them to cycle. This is possibly because in car-dominant societies, the cyclist is seen as a lawless, immature, and dangerous creature (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tranpol.2010.08.004). Cycling is also seen by black people as "something that white people do" which may act as a barrier (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtrangeo.2023.103576). It was also found that people who feel that they are unable to reduce car use (i.e., car dependent) are less likely to cycle (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.trf.2022.05.025).

Re: Cycling motivation survey - looking for participants
Thank you for your time and comments! I'm no longer able to change the details of the survey at this stage, but that's helpful to know for future studies.SwiftyDoesIt wrote: ↑16 Mar 2024, 4:47pm Done it but several things came up.
Define 'easy' this is too much of a generalisation and has so many variables on any given day.
Define 'bad' weather, this is such a variable factor on any given day and changes mid ride. If you had said 'Extreme' weather (torrential rain, snowing, hail, sub zero or greater than 30C temperatures) this would make it easier to give an answer.
What cycling events, there are many different types?
Define bike parking, propping a bike against a window, wall, railing, bench, lamp-post is 'parking' and is convenient. If ou had said built bike parking this would be clearer as to what you meant
There are no third genders, it's male or female, you need a biology lesson!
Regarding the gender issue, some people have non-binary gender, so I wouldn't have been able to get ethical approval without including a third option as excluding such people would be discriminatory.

Thanks for your observations, I'll make sure to share my results!cycle tramp wrote: ↑16 Mar 2024, 3:07pm Done - however to further quantify my responses, in live in a village in the middle of the Somerset levels which is quite rural.
Most of the routes I take involve a combination of roads, farm tracks, mixed walking and cycle ways, and urban cut throughs.
I suspect the responses you'll receive will be based on two things - the riders age and where they live (and by that the number of cycling facilities in the questionnaire's immediate environment)...
..I'm also suspecting a spilt in the responses as well - for those who cycle for fitness going of less times in a given period (but probably for longer) compared with those who cycle more out of environment concerns who might go out more but cycle for shorter periods...
.but..equally I've been so very wrong on this forum before![]()
