My thinking was a little more charitable, such as an insurance pay out that had to be used for purchase or something similar.

Everything too specific: price, money not important, boxed, etc to be a "maybe I won't like it".

Difficult question to answer because there are dozens of brands out there from mainstream to niche.
The big three are undoubtedly Giant, Specialized and Trek.

There's a couple of mostly online retailers like Ribble and Canyon to consider.

And big retailers like Halfords and Decathlon have Boardman and Van Rysel respectively.

You're not really going to get a "bad" bike at that price. The question is whether you get a good one *for you*.
