It's a wonderful thing ....
I totally get that. Unfortunately, at the moment, I need stats in order to avoid statins

Grldtnr wrote: 21 Jul 2024, 10:46am Hmmm! I've managed without such devices for over 50 years, mind you they've only been available for half of them.
It’s more for the stats than the navigation element. I need to improve my health so monitoring calories, heart rate, heart rate variability, VO2 etc will be useful for me as I can take a level of control and watch the numbers change - I’ve already reduced by blood pressure by buying a bike and riding regularly for the past couple of weeks.

The navigation side of it is useful; As a visual indicator of where you are on your ride, how far it is to get back, hill climbs etc - depends what you’re cycling for.

I could do it all in my phone but I’d prefer a dedicated device.

Re: Bryton or Wahoo?

Well I’ve gone for the Bryton S800.
I was pretty much sold on the S500 but the S800 is currently on an Amazon Prime Day deal making the S800 with sensors the same price as the S500 was before the deal.

I’ll report back with my findings.

Re: Bryton or Wahoo?

Interesting that the app seems to be a major problem in the S800 review but not in the S500 review despite being the same app.
Looks like the app has been sorted out since then with c10 updates since the reviews.

freeflow wrote: 15 Jul 2024, 3:13pm Have you considered a smartphone?
Yes, I’ve been using my iPhone up until now but find that the battery runs down quickly.
I think I’d rather have a dedicated device plus a device with sensors should give me more accurate health stats (where Apple Health currently estimates calories etc based on distance and heart rate).

I use Komoot for navigation but I understand that this can be synced with most devices.

Bryton or Wahoo?

Hi,

With Prime day looming I'm looking into getting a bike computer.

I'm pretty much decided on Bryton but can't make my mind up on the S500 or S800.

That being said, the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt v2 also looks good.

My main motivation is fitness - so I'll be looking to buy a bundle that includes speed/cadence and heart rate sensors.

I'm aware that the Wahoo (and Garmin) units are more popular, but the Bryton units seem like more my kind of thing (I appreciate that doesn't make any sense at all!)

I’m absolutely loving it!
I’ve done 15km every morning this week and the bike performs way better than I expected for the price.
I’m gradually collecting together all the bits I need …clothing, accessories etc and I’m wondering why I ever stopped having a bike!

Re: Bike recommendation for commute to work...

So, two rides in - 7 miles yesterday and 10 miles this morning.

I've got to say I couldn't be happier with it!

You can tell by looking at it that it that it's not an 'expensive' bike, the frame welds are pretty ugly (frame made in Indonesia) but, as long as it holds together, that's fine.
With the breaks and gears being Shimano, there's not much to fault there. The tyres seem pretty solid and the multiple mounting points are very useful.

It's great to ride ...surprisingly so in fact. The gear changes are sharp and precise and the brakes are very positive (I have to keep remembering 'left before right' - I seem to have forgotten that along the way!). The saddle is comfortable enough. It does have quite a long reach (as was mentioned previously) so you're almost in a road bike head-down position but it's not uncomfortable and doesn't bother me - I guess that's part of it's 'hybrid-ness'.

I've not got much to compare it too as the the last time I rode a bike was when I borrowed my sisters MTB for two weeks in 1996 - before that I had a BMX and a racer when I was growing up so this bike seems 'hi-tech' to me - nonetheless, I'm very happy with it!

Now then ...the issue of the mud guards!
It rained throughout the entire hour that I was out this morning. The top half was fine - I managed to get a good Boardman waterproof jersey in the sale at Halfords.
Bottom half - not nearly as successful. Wet behind, wet legs, wet feet! ...so I may well re-think the mud guards
I will try waterproofs as, after nine years of walking to work, I've got to say, it doesn't actually rain that much (when it does, IT DOES! ...and usually for two weeks). If I can't make that work, I'll admit defeat and get the Mary Poppins mud guards  ...sorry, what can I say, I'm a child of the 80s - form over substance all the way ...until it doesn't work and I have to eat my hat!

PH wrote: 1 Jul 2024, 11:42am I'm still a bit mystified by the rear wheel? Was it QR? What were the plastic nuts and were you meant to remove them?
Weirdly, on even closer inspection, the nuts fitted weren't plastic at all!

I fitted the QR as I'm not likely to ever leave it unattended in public.

Jdsk wrote: 1 Jul 2024, 9:31am I'd probably want bigger mudguards on a bike for commuting.

Thoughts about lights?
Mudguards - I’ll see how they go, they were only £12 so they can go on my wife’s bike if no good - I’m planning to get waterproof over-trousers for wet conditions.

Lights - next on my list. I’ll probably go to Halfords and see what they’ve got.
I bought a Lazer helmet yesterday which you can attach a rear light to (in addition to bike lights of course).

Re: Bike recommendation for commute to work...

Day off work today so I’m going out for a ride in a bit.

I fitted the qr axle as my works new office have a secure bike room and I’ll not be leaving it in public anywhere - photo of the axle fitted and the qr below.

I’ve added mudguards, a pump, a bottle and a frame bag for tools/spares and it also has a window for my phone which will be useful for navigation.

So far I’m reasonably impressed with it - you can tell that its ’entry level’ but given the ‘Triggers Broom’ nature of these things, it seems a great place to start from.

I’ll report back after riding!

Re: Bike recommendation for commute to work...

I think it’s me on both counts

I got a mini pump with a gauge and it reads the same. Also I sat on it for the first time and what i thought was ‘solid’ was actually ’bulgy’ - so I guess it needs 40+ after all.

On closer inspection of the back wheel nuts …they are plastic! So I’ll be swapping them out for the QRs

Maybe tomorrow I’ll get to go out on it!

Re: Bike recommendation for commute to work...

Definitely not packing pieces - the front forks had a plastic protector but even that was secured with metal hex bolts.
I’ll take a photo when I get a chance - I’m assuming I need to remove what’s there and replace with the qr.

Re: Bike recommendation for commute to work...

New bike day was yesterday - all going well so far but I have a couple of dumb questions…

It’s all assembled (I’m going to go over and do a second check before riding). Both wheels are supposed to be quick release, the back wheel was already on it but attached with hex bolts - it came with two qr axles - I take it I need to remove the hex bolts and fit the qr?

Also, when pumping up the tyres, the recommended pressure range is 40 to 70 psi, I’m using an electric car pump with a presta adapter, I thought I’d go for 50psi but I got to around 25psi and it feels totally solid - like as much as I’d put in if I was pumping it up by had without a gauge - is it safe to go higher, feels like it might blow?
