Re: How to set bearing preload on pedals without a tabbed washer? 11 mm cone & 9 mm lock nut

Well, it turned out that even on the other side the bearing balls were dislodged (where they are held in place with a plastic cap). Whenever I put the plastic cap in place, they get dislodged again. I can't help thinking that the grease is just too thick.
Should have bought 5€ Xi Jinping pedals instead of this junk. .

i haven't gone through it all, but i did see a diagram with a "special tool"....basically a box spanner within a box spanner....which allows you to turn the locknut or cone selectively.
....this may not answer the problem with the balls mis-behaving!
The tool (just a piece of metal) costs twice as much as the pedals... thanks but no thanks.

Re: How to set bearing preload on pedals without a tabbed washer? 11 mm cone & 9 mm lock nut

I have a similar problem. The pedals are brand new (Shimano PD-EF202), but the right one made a loud clicking noise (twice per turn) and it felt as if something was wrong with the bearings. I should of sent them back, but I was daft enough to open them up (after doing some research on the net) assuming that it would not be too much of a problem to properly adjust the bearings without the proper tool (just trial and error). When I opened them up, it turned out that some of the bearing balls were stacked upon each other instead of next to one another and one bearing ball was stuck between the bearing race and the pedal wall. When trying to reassemble, exactly that the same thing keeps happening (bearing balls escaping or stacking on top of each other) every time I tighten the locknut. What could be the problem? Could it be that the grease has too high viscosity (this is what my intuition tells me)? Would it be worth cleaning the whol thing out and trying again with fresh grease? Thanks in advance for any advice.
