Re: Insurance claim - advice sought

If it can be repaired then that's ok. If it can't, then you have a right to have the bike replaced with a like-for-like model if it's still made or cash to the value of the original if it isn't. The supplier that the loss adjuster wants to use is immaterial. If they can't supply a replacement that's...

Re: Tyre size - weight limit chart

It is indeed general advice, not specific to either the tyre model or to long distance cycling (the table in Doughty's book was an extract from an earlier book by F J Berto). I have no idea what my weight distribution is Snibgo, but just to clarify, the author isn't contradicting the tyre sidewall i...

Tyre size - weight limit chart

I have some Schwalbe Ultremo 23mm tyres sitting in the garage, having swapped to Conti GP 4 season 28's soon after buying the bike three years ago. I was thinking of using the Ultremos this summer to simply get use out of some serious quality rubber. I swapped to the 28's as they were higher mileage...

Re: Casual clothing for cycling

I'm in my 50's and find these merino wool tops a bit looser fit, very comfy, free from logos or adverts, non-smelly for when I tour and generally very comfy. I liked the first one so much that I bought a second one and it was a different size and cut, but after some wrangling with the manufacturer w...

Re: Garmin Edge 500 Won't Upload.

Mine uploads as long as my ride was about 20 miles or so, but a normal day ride of 60+ miles has never uploaded no matter how long I wait. It just doesn't seem to cope with longer rides. Correction, after four hours plus of uploading, it's uploaded one third of yesterday's ride. It's calculated my m...

Re: Garmin Edge 500 Won't Upload.

My garmin etrex hcx does the same. Garmin don't seem able to help so far. They've pointed me at a way of isolating the ride file by turning the device into a mass storage device and using the 'finder' (I use a Mac)...but the computer can't see any files on the device except the map on the micro sd c...

Re: Which GPS?

Audax UK do some very useful, very extensive links on the subject. http://www.aukadia.net/gps/ I've recently started using a Garmin etrex Vista HCx. It's colour screen is small but clear, maps cover European roads but is not OS style for off road. It's two rechargeable AA batteries give me 15 hours ...

Re: IAM launches cycling membership

I qualified as a senior observer for the IAM advanced motorcycle test over 10 years ago. Once you pass the IAM advanced test, you keep the qualification even if you forget everything you learned. RoSPA require re-qualification every three years - that means more in my view. I have plenty of personal...

Re: Warmest winter kit

The worst thing you can do in very cold weather is sweat as once you stop cycling or start to descend you'll become very cold indeed,I find that theres a fine balance between too warm which equals sweat which cools and so do I. I think this particularly applies to layering systems, where moisture i...

Re: Warmest winter kit

Buffalo DP cycling top http://www.lansdaleltd.com/prod.php/prod/BUFFCYCLE. I've not been cold this winter even standing still in minus 5 changing an inner tube and worn with no base layers it's still plenty warm enough at -10c whilst moving. It gets too warm above +10c even with the vent zips fully ...

Re: Continental Contact Vs Schwalbe Marathon Plus

Sorry to be a bit late with this post! In the past year and a bit I've done 2,000 miles on Conti Top Contacts, 3,500 miles on Schwalbe Marathon Supremes and about 1,500 miles on Marathon Pluses in the past year all in similar circumstances. The Contis are middling weight, but pick up lots of debris ...

Re: double down sleeping bag

These are probably not quite what you were thinking of, but may be worth considering. http://www.buffalosystems.co.uk/Sleeping_Bags_thumbnails.htm The Buffalo double bags are warm when wet, unlike down. They are also machine washable and last donkey's years. I've had one for over 15 years now. The f...

Re: whether I have been reccomended appropriate winter clothing

Limehouse, I wouldn't want to wear one for any real length of time in more than +10 degrees, though short commutes you could go a little warmer. As for how cold - well I haven't found a day cold enough yet and I've ridden in -8 degrees plus windchill just a week or so ago. I wouldn't want to stand a...

Re: whether I have been reccomended appropriate winter clothing

I can't argue with the leg-wear recommendation, but would strongly suggest an alternative to the Gore kit. The Gore is fine if you use a layer system and if you also buy waterproofs. The Gore by itself is over £100 and by the time you've bought the rest it's obviously going to add up and at times in...
