They're useless, that's why.
They don't keep mud off you. And they're the first thing to snap when you have a spill.

Mountain biker needing road bike help...
Hi all
I'm into mountain biking....
A mate of mine is looking into getting a road bike so I said I would seek some advice on his behalf. He's looking at spending no more that £300.
I've looked at the "What road bike" thread, and there's nothing there... Please help.
Where does he start? What can he hope to get from tat budget??
Thanks in advance
Michael

Grizedale Forest
Hi all,
me and a mate are thinking of going away for a couple of days to the lakes. After a bit of research, I cam up with Grizedale Forest. There seems to be a few trails there etc, good for camping too.
So has anybody got an opinion they'd be willing to share with me? Is it worth the 2 hours journey (I live in Halifax)???
Look forward to your replies..

Bitten by a dog!!
All...
I've fallen off, smashed mudguards, broken lights and had many bruises.
yesterday while out on some excellent trails, we went past a farmhouse/cottage. Then out came some fierce looking black dog and bit my ankle!!!!
So, aside from the many comments about this, I have one question...
Is that it? Can I now consider myself a proper biker????
What else is left??

Hemipode wrote:Hi Michael.
If you do remove your chain you will need to use a new connecting pin or you could consider fitting one of these which makes any future removal & re-fit very easy. I use one on my 8 speed tourer & would recommend them.
There is a huge array of opinions on chain maintenance on this thread.
Personally I like a clean (ish) chain & the slick gear changes it allows (now prepared for the ongoing 'to clean or not to clean' posts! )
Hope this helps,
Ken.
Cheers ken.
Are they safe on a MTB? Also, (this sounds thick asking it) just to be sure. I have 24 gears, so I'll need a 8sp one. Right?

Chain removal. Good idea?
All,
I'm getting more into looking after my bike now and wonder - should I remove my chain to clean?
I have a tool already, but should I use it?
If so, will it weaken the chain at all? I have no spare pins, and I've been advised I shouldn't put the same pin back in (if I removed the chain). Is this the case?
I've seen the various threads on cleaning chains, but would like some advice prior to that point!!
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Michael

I was thinking of getting a Niteflux Photon with 3x4 watt LED's as a road light for pitch black country roads with speeds up to 35mph. Now available for under £150 they look great value if the run times are accurate.
Made my own LED bike lights 4x3watt LED's cost about £16 total plus 50p for each lens. Obviously there was some time and expertese to build them and make a controller circuit, but I get about 8 hours runtime off of 10xAA rechargable batteries. That just puts into perspective the profit margins on these so called value lights, cost of the LED's is peanuts but they still command a premium price. Although spend £150 on a light does get you very good build quality.
The 2x3watt flashing rear lights really micturate off motorists who follow me too closely they have a brightness comparable with car brake lights.
BTW the flashing low profile lightbars that the police use these days have 5x1watt LED's per flashing unit, so my bike lights in strobe mode are comparable to these.
Hi
Really interested in doing this. Any guidance on how to do it you can point me to?
Thanks
Michael

Front gears and basic maintenance
Can anybody help?
I only ever come on here for advice!!
My front gears are giving me some bother. They change up okay, but not back down. The chain rubs for a while against the housing then it eventually changes down. On close inspection, it looks as though it’s not springing back enough. Is there a spring to tighten? It’s a Shimano Altus if that helps?
I’m new to this fixing it myself stuff. Or is it back to the bike shop?
Also, is there a good book out there which would help me with basic maintenance? I’ve looked and there are quite a few. But which one is best?
Thanks again

New Jacket
Well, I got home from being out and about and somehow my cycling jacket had found it's way into the dryer... gutted. Now too small to fit a human.
So I'm looking for a new one and seen this on flea-bay. Anybody heard of the make etc?? I'm not that bothered about illuminous and rear pockets etc, as I'll be using for off-road..
Any opinions?? or an alternative for a similar price??
Thanks all.

Lights
Hi all,
I would like some lights. I currently have some little LED ones. Fine for being seen, not so fine for lighting up the way ahead.
Any recommendations?
I'm looking for some that are inexpensive and light up the [ath ahead.
I've heard about people use torches and jubilee clips - is this the way forward?
