Re: It's not rocket science

[XAP]Bob my point about gravity was it's claimed to act on mass, not gas pressure. Gravity does not stop gas pressure from being pressurized, so the problem of why it is not all dissipating into space, remains. I’m sure you are deliberately ignoring what I wrote. Gas has mass. That mass experiences...

Re: It's not rocket science

The simple test is to take a 10m length of hose, closed with a transparent section at the top. Fill it, and a barrel, with water and have the open end of the hose in the barrel and then lift the end up 10m... on the way up the water will stay there, because the air pushing down on the surface can su...

Re: It's not rocket science

Things have come a long way since this thread started but not for heliocentrism, that continues to be riddled with contradictions. Around the start of this thread I said "It seems then to be some sort of enclosed system" and yes, we have gas pressure on the Earth and the 2nd law of thermo...

All the ancient "public" schools were. That is why they are called public. They were taken over by the privileged.

Or rather the state system stepped in, so they turned their attention elsewhere..

Re: Would you Abolish Eton?

The issue with trying to ‘quota’ intake to public schools is one aptly demonstrated by Rugby school many years ago. Those kids who were brought in and funded simply didn’t fit and did not do particularly well. Now, it was an exercise/experiment in extreme social mobility - the school does take a dec...

Re: Tyres for trike

Given your terrain issues I think they’re worth a try - they’re as light/fast as the M range goes, but are still pretty fairy repellant

Yep - the tryker sidewalls won’t take too much abuse.

Re: Tyres for trike

Can I ask why not trykers?

If you live in a flint ridden area then Incan understand it, but they are otherwise an excellent combination.

Re: People shouting 'left' 'right' etc on a cylce path whilst approaching from behind

My view is you shouldn't be calling out at all, It's a misnomer to believe that calling out is merely to inform other cyclists on the road/trail that you are coming, it is in fact to tell the other cyclist to 'hold their line' so as not to veer into you. ...and what happens when the road conditions...

Re: A noob asks... what is the point of toe clips for a commute?

To all those claiming that no-one 'pulls up' I have pulled a number of cleats off the bottom of my shoes... Isn't that partly because hydraulic action from walking sucks in water that corrodes the bolts? ;) That's what happened to the ones holding my cleat blanking plates on when I stopped using th...

Re: Ever been stopped at security at the ferry port?

Stopped and searched at Portsmouth outbound. It was a 'Jobs Worth' who made us go through a scanner after making my wife and I take of our shoes. It was raining hard at the time and the floor was wet and filthy. My wife expressed her view to him and his response was.' We've stopped a lot of terrori...

Re: A noob asks... what is the point of toe clips for a commute?

The other minor benefit that I hadn’t seen mentioned after reading the first n posts... Even loose clips ensure that you keep the right bit of the foot over the pedal axle (assuming they are correctly adjusted). I use spd ‘clipless’ pedals because on a ‘bent trike I can’t fall off and really don’t w...

Re: Hand-bikes and suchlike

Yes, they do (I used to swim a lot) but in fly and breaststroke a lot of the power comes from the torso - one of the reasons fly is actually faster than crawl over short distances - massive muscle contribution. The offset when pedalling makes sense - you can’t generate all that much power with the c...
