Re: ...if it’s ever possible to enjoy cycling in the rain

I have considered a recumbent but only tried one in dry conditions. It did occur to me that in the rain the water would run back down your legs and you would get a soggy seat. On an upright with a cape I only get wet from about the knees down but on a recumbent? Any comments? Rain tends to come fro...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

Of course bike brakes are not currently designed to to continue working when overheated Bob. That's precisely the point I'm making! They SHOULD be required to do so, on safety grounds. (Long steep descents at speed, with heavy braking .) The technology clearly exists to meet that need, so why isn't...

Re: Non-recycleable plastic

I think we should unwrap stuff at the checkouts and leave the rubbish for them to dispose of. Give it six months - providing most shoppers do it - and the problem would be gone. The problem is getting even a minority of shoppers to do it. in France we always seem to weigh our own veg and and put a ...

There are a number of accessibility gains to be had, but otherwise I agree that the benefits are likely to be slim at best.

Re: Non-recycleable plastic

We don’t, and can’t be expected to know. This is partly because every area does it differently - there is no ‘standard’ anywhere. Personally I think we should have a ‘clean waste’ bin and a ‘dirty waste’ bin... one headed for landfill/incineration, the other to be sorted professionally and recycled/...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

The discs get red hot, but they are a long way away, and significantly insulated, from the fluid in the calipers - which are much larger, and well cooled.

They are designed to run at 1000+ degrees, bike brakes are not...

They’re sprockets, not cogs... ;)

As with all such things - a cable would have done quite well... you gain is some area, and lose in anither (generally the wallet and reliability)

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

Brucey wrote - 'A synthetic version of DOT fluid is used.' (Formula 1.) Presumably that fluid is more 'boil proof', and fade proof, which would be of great advantage on a hydraulic disc braked system road bike. I take it that said fluid is prohibitively expensive, requiring special components (seal...

It’s not in stock - so they put a silly price to stop people ordering, and then when they get it back in stock they can reduce the price, retaining the previous purchase history.
